Re; 2004 the majority of the best singles released that year peaked at #3

Boulevard is still better but it's as much a 2005 song as 2004 for most people.

The best song of 2004 barely even charted! (Sarah McLachlan - World On Fire - #72). That said, Lola's Theme and These Words were a close second and third and both got to #1 in the UK! And it's the only year EVER where both The Corrs and Delta Goodrem have released new music in the same year - amazing.

The thing with 2004 was that there was a LOT of "novelty" stuff. Not proper novelty songs, but lots of silly songs, like Milkshake, Cha Cha Slide, My Band, Thunderbirds, My Neck My Back (anybody remember THAT!), Baby Cakes, Dragostea Din Tei, Fit But You Know It (), etc. Or songs like Gangnam Style which became hits probably more to do with their music videos, like Call On Me and Somebody to Love. Atll that on top of Eamon and Frankee.

People can complain about Thrift Shop, Gangnam Style and Call Me Maybe being huge, but 2004 was on a whole other level!

There were a few good "normal" songs though. Hey Ya! by Outkast (although that's also pretty silly now that I think about it), Christina's version of Car Wash, Hotel by Cassidy, LEFT OUTSIDE ALONE (have to put it in capitals to represent her SHOUTING ), Lola's Theme, Take Me to the Clouds Above (although I got fed up of it at time, it was on the radio too much).

First time of hearing Fuck It (I Don't Want You Back) on Radio 1 today and I really like it! As for 2004 being a bad year for music, most definitely not! This year holds classics like In the Shadows, Take Me Out, Toxic, Call On Me, Everytime, Lola's Theme, Take Me to the Clouds Above, These Words, Yeah!, Left Outside Alone, Lose My Breath, Hey Ya...I could go on forever!

I Believe In You???? poor Kylie.

2004 was one of my favourite years of music ever, so many amazing albums/singles!

The Killers - Hot Fuss

Maroon 5 - Songs About Jane

Avril Lavigne - Under My Skin (her finest work)

Snow Patrol - Final Straw

Usher - Confessions

Keane - Hopes and Fears

Girls Aloud - What Will The Neighbours Say?

Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand

Anastacia - Anastacia

Natasha Bedingfield - Unwritten

Eminem - Encore

Alicia Keys - The Diary of

Britney Spears - In The Zone

Green Day - American Idiot

I could go on and on

Sorry to take this off topic but does anyone know if Macklemore will be releasing 'Same Love' in the UK at any point?
Surprised the new Noah and the Whale single isn't doing anything, I bought it earlier on iTunes! Wasn't L.I.F.E.G.O.E.S.O.N. on air on sale too, and had a fairly respectable debut?

2004 was all about 'Naughty Girl' and 'Lose My Breath' for me. Beyonce slayed that year...not that it was hard.

Combining all versions, It's Time is now top 40 and I'm pretty sure On Top Of The World would be as well if we could combine with the version just outside the top 100. Three songs for Imagine Dragons in the chart this week? Maybe wishful thinking but that'd be amazing

As for the discussion about 2004, I agree that it had some great music, but also some awful music. But you could say that about any year!

I'll always see it like this:

2000-2001 - a pretty boring period for music in general.

2002-2003 - absolutely great music scene (Mis Teeq, Christina Aguilera, Pink, Britney, Avril, Justin, GA, Sugababes etc).

2004-2005 - music scene in rapid decline bar a few gems.

2006-2007 surprisingly brilliant period for music (Rihanna, Beyonce, Shakira, Justin, Gnarles Barkley, Christina, Nelly Furtado, Amy Winehouse, Leona).

2008 - the year where the music industry was visibly in recovery.

2009-present - the new era of music, 2009 for me was the revolutionary year due to huge sales and a huge change in sound.

On the topic of Chris Brown, I hope FC flops. He's trying his best to imitate Michael Jackson but is just embarrassing himself instead.

I Believe In You???? poor Kylie.

Well that goes without saying. ;) Still gutted it didn't reach number one because she chose to release it post-album!

It's been mentioned that Eamon's F*ck It (I Don't Want You Back) has re-entered, any others due to BBC Radio 1's "Big Ones" day? The on-and-off LivePopBars is currently 'off' for me.

With the exception of Kylie who was slaying in this period? :D

Really detest that new Chris Brown song, which is a shame as he had some (one) gem in his last era.

And this makes me slightly sick to say, but even Ne-Yo pulls off cheap Michael Jackson impersonations better than this. Truly horrific all round.

I've always hated Lola's Theme, I know I'm alone!
You most certainly are NOT alone :puke: :puke: :puke:

END OF DISCUSSION.

YOU WIN! :D (Two of my top 3 EVER - coincidentally, 'Everytime' is second and that was a 2004 single/#1! :o)

So I ADORE 2004 (but that seems to be the general opinion around here, if people were to ignore the number 1's). So many classics. Plus Now 59 is one of the best Now albums to be released. I also had personal connections to Britney Spears 'Everytime'/Usher 'Burn'/Mario Winans 'I Don't Wanna Know'.

Just checked out the tracking list for Now! 59 and most of the songs I recognise are brilliant, especially the string of songs from "She Will Be Loved" to "More, More, More". I think I should pull out all the songs I l like from the Now! collection from the 00s and make a playlist, because that decade was oozing with spectacular songs.
