I do think it has an effect though through appearing in the feed. Avicii will have gained thousands of extra pre-orders from people noticing it whilst browsing the top 100 on iTunes. The added instant visibility to consumers in the upper reaches of the chart on the first few hours of release won't hurt either!

Quite possible. But that's an advantage gained by a change in iTunes itself, not record labels 'finding a way to manipulate iTunes' - unless iTunes changed it due to pressure from record labels of course but I doubt that somehow

Incidentally it would be funny if a pre-order was top 10 at the time of the Big Top 40 lockdown. Although I suppose airplay could get a song in there before its release anyway (but not in the top 10).

Brb, listening to Avicii 100 times!

I'm on my 4th play in 17 minutes. Such an anthemic track, it really is so much better than 'ICBTO' and I thought that was a dance gem.

Looks like there will be a decent top 10 clear out if Selena, Avril and Breach keep climbing.

As for Avicii's lead, I wonder how far ahead of #2 he can get on iTunes.

I still think it's a bit cheeky to put up a pre-order two months before the actual download release date, a la Avril! Maybe not 'manipulation' then but obviously some record companies will notice the effect that it has and we'll see far more individual track pre-orders appearing. Lawson and The Wanted for example made sure that they had one out alongside the EP pre-order because they knew that it would give them an instant foothold in the top ten on single release day.

To be fair I'm pretty sure Avril was scheduled for a much earlier release when her pre-order was first put up. I still think she should have released immediately after her performance on The Voice, any potential hype from that bar a few extra pre-orders will have completely vanished by now and I doubt many people will even remember she was on there. Wasted opportunity much.

The releasing an EP *and* a single pre-order thing definitely IS manipulating though, I will agree with you on that :P That's just getting 2 sales out of people who want to get all the remixes as well when they could easily have just released the EP with the main single version as track 1 (like any normal EP release).

OK now it's becoming INSANE the lead!!!

1 Avicii - Wake Me Up 1.0000

2 Robin Thicke - Blurred Lines (feat. T.I. & Pharrell) 0.2963

10 Jason Derulo - The Other Side 0.1173

And it's only 11AM in the morning... WTF?!?!

If Robin is gonna sell 70-80K this week... so... it's on his wasy to do a 250K+???

And if the number 10 will sell about 25-30K... it's again, on his way to sell 300K right now?

I think it's very safe to say 200K this week for sure.

:right: 11. Here's to Never Growing Up - Avril Lavigne

 12. Jack - Breach

^ COME ON BREACH. :cheer:

 33. Lighthouse - Lucy Spraggan

 160. Gun - CHVRCHES

What was the #100 on Kworb when 'Blurred Lines' first came out? Would be the easiest way to tell how much Avicii is likely to be heading for if anyone knows. #100 at the moment is 0.0093 and will likely decrease more.

99. Work - JME

Assuming this is also a new release?

If I remember well it was around on 0.029 - 0.032

That's an insane lead for Avicii if he does 100k+ Weds mids, than there's a possibility of breaking 200k barrier, it be interesting next week to see how much it drops or increases in its second week, we could see the top 2 on 6 figures.

Predictable question alert:

What was the last song to sell over 200k in its opening week? (excluding winners singles/charity singles)

Cheryl Cole's Fight For This Love, which sold over 292k in October 2009.

It's the best (and only 1 good) Little Mix song.

I don't know the original.
