If you're not counting Paradise (or Somebody That I Used To Know) then Killing In The Name, and before that Sex On Fire.

Well Killing In The Name was a kinda "forced" Number 1 so yeah I guess the last bona fide rock Number 1 was Sex on Fire!! :o

I'm surprised that John Newman is doing so poor on pre-orders taking into account that he has the best airplay.

Just goes to show that it's not exactly a great song!

I don't see why Coldplay should be excluded - after all, what else could their music be called other than rock? (please, no smart ass answers to that) :P

Well you can hardly call Paradise a rock classic in the same way that you can call Sex On Fire a rock classic.

They're both equally commercial, just that one has more guitars than the other. Both work as rock songs and pop songs, no difference to me.

And I'd count Somebody That I Used To Know as well as Paradise - running with the "anything that XFM would play" criteria then I'm sure Gotye would count. And I'm claiming Lorde if Royals gets there.

Quite a lot of their music, including "Paradise" is a long way from Rock. "Viva La Vida" rocks a lot more than "Paradise" but manages to achieve that without very much use (if any) of guitars, instead relying on strings, percussion & synthesizers.

I guess everyone has slightly different criteria for what counts as "rock" - but if I was to think of rock music, Lorde or Gotye wouldn't exactly be the first things that come to my mind!

Yeah, I think a lot of their ealier stuff was a lot more rock ('In My Place', 'Yellow' etc.) - my point is that 'Paradise' just isn't very rock!

I was half joking about Lorde.

I don't see what else Somebody That I Used To Know could be. It's hardly a straightforward pop song and Gotye as an artist is pretty much alternative rock.

I dunno, Gotye could be classed as alternative pop or something. I hate defining music genres anyway, I was just trying to think of the last time we had a proper big guitar song at Number 1!

 25 Jasmine Thompson - Ain't Nobody.

Obviously recognise this from the Sainsbury' s advert. Her voice is stunning, even checked out her cover of La La La as well which is also really good.

Climb higher please.

The backing music is sounding very Gotye ish too.

 7 Macklemore & Ryan Lewis ft Mary Lambert- Same Love

 8 Demi Lovato- Skyscraper

Hope this doesn't drop any further for her. Although it was inevitable that it would start dropping down wasn't it? Still it least it hold onto a Top10 spot for her.

Indeed keep climbing this. Hopefully she can make the Top40 on Sunday also I see the original is at #482. No sign of LL Cool J's version or the other versions that have been done over the years.

Versions of 'Ain't Nobody chartwise:

Rufus and Chaka Khan's: #8 in 1984, #6 in 1989

Inner City: #10 in 1989

KWS and Gwen Dickey: #21 in 1994

Jaki Graham: #44 in 1994

Diana King: #13 in 1995

LL Cool J: #1 in 1997

The Course: #8 in 1997

Lorde and Gotye are Alternative.

Kings of Leon and RAtM are Rock.

Coldplay are Pop-Rock.

Sorted ;)

Hopefully 1R will be able to outsell The Vamps by the end of the week. They were quite front loaded and 1R's lead on itunes is quite large at the moment. (outselling them 2:1 it looks like). If they were on for 50-55k, they should be selling like ~7.5k a day? The Vamps are likely selling ~4.5k a day (Once EP sales/other versions are included). So it'll be quite a close call come Sunday! I hope on Friday/Saturday that "Counting Stars" gets used in Strictly/X-factor or that other dance program and gives it a big enough boost to make it to #1!

I used to listen to the Ricky Gervais Show on XFM, and they used to play Eminem and The Streets, who I wouldn't consider rock at all.

Whats the difference between indie & rock?

Well... one of those makes a lot of noise the other one doesn't
