I guess it really is a case of a song that was just underexposed. It had all the makings of a hit, but I guess it just wasn't heard enough on the radio/ tv at the time or maybe got overshadowed by other big hits at the time, Lana, etc.

The problem the first time around was that her label decided to keep pushing it back and back for months and by the time it finally came out the hype had long since died out. IIRC.

What About Us is quite Backstreet Boys/retro, I thought it'd be a lot bigger than it looks like being. But then the horrendous release strategy barely helped.

I think having the same song as a performance / prominent backing music on 3 (4?) consecutive shows is pretty much spamming it.

They can't really help what somebody chose to sing for their audition can they? :/ Granted they are the ones 'spamming' it with soundbed usage but they do far more for Read All About It and Clown for example.

It was out at the end of July 2012 WW and iirc there were 2 or 3 fake versions floating around the top 1000 or so (not always a sign of big things to come but still), but it was released at the end of February 2012 in the UK :drama: There was a bit of a stigma in regards to Disney on radio iirc, but then again Miley got a good few top 20s and Selena got a top 10 with Naturally. This year that's definitely broken though with the 'old' generation of Demi, Selena and Miley getting hits with Heart Attack, Come & Get It and We Can't Stop plus Bridgit Mendler having a hit with Ready Or Not. Wrecking Ball and of course Skyscraper will follow suit.

Only Brad tailing behind now, but great to see that the single and Tristan, Connor and James' versions are so close together!

I'm not exactly defensive about XF's spam of Emeli either  But I don't believe for a second that Demi's label are clever enough to organise this new push for 'Skyscraper' as a reaction to its (coincidentally quite heavy and repeated) usage on X Factor. Very fishy sitch. Especially considering Demi's links to the US X Factor.

I could also get ULTRA cynical and say that the girl who performed 'Skyscraper' might have been told to sing that by the producers but I'll give her the benefit of the doubt for that  Something still smells of payola with the constant soundbed usage.

I'm gonna drop the Demi thing now because I'm conscious that it's probably grating on everyone. BRB into the sulk corner ~

The best song i've heard from Maxsta is "Skadoosh"

I'm reasonably confident both The Vamps and Demi will fade over the week and, failing a highly unlikely shock #1 from Chase & Status, we'll just end up with Jason or Katy at #1 again. But the pessimist in me thinks they're going to spam 'Skyscraper' AGAIN on XF tomorrow (this whole situation reeks of label payola) and it'll end up taking #1 much to the delight of pretty much everyone except me and SevenSeize.

(yes, I am pressed)

It's probably not actual payola, but there are people that are employed to suggest/present songs to companies for their adverts, movies, TV shows, etc.

Not impossible. Many new releases overtaking it anyway.

I suppose it IS a bit fishy they suddenly use it after Hannah's audition aired, but in the same way you're going to be biased in despising the song, I'm going to biased for adoring it. Still, people obviously like it if they're buying it. And at least it's a song that didn't do very well first time around, I don't mind random X-Factor resurgances if it's a song I love or the song didn't do too well to start with.

Oh dear, I meant July 2011  This is why I should be trying to function beyond lying in bed watching TV or listening to music when it's the early hours of the morning.

Slow and steady wins the race, it took Demi nearly a year and a half :P

I'll grant you this :D I do agree it objectively has the makings of a hit like Michael said despite how unbearable it is to me so it's not exactly surprising that it's doing so well after the exposure.

Most of TDCC's sales will be for the EP version. 3 brand new songs + a remix for 1.99 is a lot more tempting than just 99p for the main single, as awesome sauce as it is.

Please, they'll be a One Door Cinema Club in about a year and a half. Failing that... extinct.

Did I read that Christina Aguilera's 'Fighter' was used? Amazing song. Such a shame it wont ever get a big enough boost to rechart in the top 40 :(

These weird eight year olds are going to get a number one? And Gaga couldn't?

#what?
