X Factor's dominance has diminished in the last 2 years or so (besides the winners single.) None of the guest performers went #1 the week they performed this year, when that happened virtually every week in 2009.

Doesn't help that artists perform songs that have already been a hit or acts like Celine Dion and Cher appear who were never expected to manage #1 in the first place - I doubt Celine and Cher would have even gone Top 40 had it not been for X Factor so I don't totally agree that X Factor's effect has worn off that much.

1-4-1 is a bizarre yo-yo run! No doubt its sales decreased nonetheless though :( Why is the release schedule so sparse? December used to be so busy for the singles chart, now its always completely dead.

 

My theory is that because it's taken as read that the Christmas Number One will be a new entry, media coverage of the "battle" focuses almost exclusively on releases in that week - so the promotional benefit even for singles that wouldn't be realistic contenders is a disincentive to release in the couple of weeks before then. Thus in the last few years the week before the Christmas chart has been really barren.
