As per a request a couple of weeks ago (I think it was Steve201), this week's Random Retro comes from 1984.

 

There had been charity records before, but this was where the modern trend really started. After seeing a Michael Buerk film on famine in Ethiopia, Bob Geldof galvanised the British pop industry to do something. Persuading, cajoling and downright bullying worked and virtually all of the major stars of the day were represented on "Do They Know It's Christmas".

 

Behind it, Wham! were kind of unlucky to run in to the Band Aid juggernaut, but "Last Christmas" remains a Christmas staple nearly 30 years on, sold over a million without ever reaching Number One, and of course George is on the number one anyway.

 

At three we have last weeks chart topper, a non-Christmas song that is now adopted as a Christmas song, mainly by means of the video. A verion recorded by Gabrielle Aplin reached number one twelve months ago after being the song chosen for the 2012 Christmas John Lewis advert.

 

Fourth place is held by a real marmite of a song, "We All Stand Together". I'm in the camp that it is a dreadful song (and shows the depths that McCartney has often plunged to, post-Beatles), but recognise the quality of the Rupert Bear video

 

Madonna Ciccone was a relative newcomber by 1984, at the time this 5th spot was a personal peak for her (although two of her previous singles would beat that on re-release), and although the "Virgin" content attracted a little bit of controversy at the time, it was an indication of just how big she was to become over the next decade or so.

 

Jim Diamond had previously been a member of one-hit wonder duo PhD but did manage four solo hits (two decent sized ones and two minor hits). This was a previous number one, and Diamond had graciously told people to not buy his single but buy Band Aid's instead at the start of the week.

 

Good ol' Shaky was on the wane by the end of '84, his retro rock'n'roll style, and a mixture of cover versions and originals that were made to sound like cover versions had perhaps worn a little thin. This was his 13th top tenner, but he only had two more to come (albeit one of those being the Number 1 "Merry Christmas Everyone")

 

Nik Kershaw's star shone for a lot less time than Shaky's, "The Riddle" being the third of his five top tenners, and the least comprehensible. Kershaw has since said himself that it is complete jibberish. Regardless, I still find it a decent song.

 

Annie Lennox & Dave Stewart had been working together for quite a long time with their work with The Tourists and Eurythmics by this time. The track is from the film "1984" based on George Orwell's novel of the same name, and was Richard Burton's last acting role.

 

Finally in the top ten we have sixties "Shane Fenton" turned seventies "Alvin Stardust", real name Bernard Jewry with the last of a trio of early 80s comeback top tenners.

A polite request with the 'random retro' etc - we already have retros posted in the second post which cover a range of years so lets not overload ourselves all in one go with retros each week? Not a real grumble as it is nice to see such enthusiasm, but too many gets a bit confusing!
