Posted December 12, 201311 yr Just as an aside to the latest topic, are there any films that are critically lauded and celebrated as one of the finest examples of their kind that for one reason or another, you couldn't connect with or were left thinking 'Is that It?!' when it was over? The BIG one for me is American Beauty - While I can understand its appeal and what it was trying to say, I find it uncomfortable to watch and its definitely not a film I want to see again, it really made me quite depressed :( Yourselves?
December 12, 201311 yr The Shawshank Redemption. It's fine, but how did it gather such legendary status? Some of is so hackneyed. And don't even get me started on Forrest Gump. (Basically, I just don't get male weepies.)
December 13, 201311 yr TOM! 'American Beauty' is brilliant. I mean it is severly depressing, uncomfortable and the ending leaves you reeling, but for the sheer impact it has i can't deny it. 'Avatar' was laughably bad when i rewatched it so i'll nominate that. Also putting 'Inception' out there; technical aspects aside there's very little for me and it's just so damn confusing no matter how many times i watch it. Oh and 'Scarface' purely for the fact that it's done SO much better in all the other big gangster films.
December 13, 201311 yr The entire Lord of the Rings franchise. I am just not that into the story. I like it and all but eh
December 13, 201311 yr Opinion on some films seems to be divided between those who had read the book first and those who hadn't. The Shining is probably one of the best examples of this. Like most people who had read the Stephen King book I found the film disappointing but people who didn't know the book tend to rate it very highly.
December 13, 201311 yr Oh no. I'm with you on 'The Shining' (perfect for this thread for me, tbh) and I haven't read the book. So disappointing and from what I can remember of it, it wasn't scary or as creepy as I had hoped.
December 13, 201311 yr Titanic. Well, I haven't actually seen it but I just KNOW it is vile. I'd second the choice of Inception. I didn't find it difficult to follow but I did find it went downhill quickly after the quite cool scenes of the results of 'torture in the past'. Plus the ending was shit, especially as it was the most obvious thing ever.
December 14, 201311 yr Titanic. Well, I haven't actually seen it but I just KNOW it is vile. The first half of 'Titanic' is ridiculously boring and slow, but as soon as the iceberg hits, it's pretty gripping and tense I thought!
December 17, 201311 yr Intouchables is NOT AMAZING okay. Nor is Amélie. I clearly don't like it when the French get sentimental. I thought The Avengers was really bad. It was certainly nice to look at, but I never felt as though the characters/the world was ever in any peril and it just wasn't punishing enough. Films can be really campy but still adrenaline-fuelled right? The Bourne Identity is another.
December 17, 201311 yr The first half of 'Titanic' is ridiculously boring and slow, but as soon as the iceberg hits, it's pretty gripping and tense I thought! HEY! SPOILERS!!1
December 19, 201311 yr The Godfather Parts 1 & II. Overlong, meandering, unexciting. I don't get why it's so beloved. I did like Goodfellas, it's the film The Godfather could have been. Also, aside from the scenes set in The Shire, I didn't like any of The Lord of the Rings films.
January 2, 201411 yr Amelie was hilariously weird :P I agree with hunger games, don't See the big deal in that or thor
January 2, 201411 yr Avatar is definitely the first one that springs to mind, I mean it wasn't terrible but it was so distinctly average in my opinion, it didn't really go anywhere. I can't even fathom why they need a second (apart from making shed loads more cash ofc)
January 3, 201411 yr The entire Lord of the Rings franchise. I am just not that into the story. I like it and all but eh I think for sheer amount of time wasted from one's life it'll never be beaten. 12 hours seems like 12 days. Dreary, humourless, pompous, self-important, characterless, unloveable, meandering. The cast are great, the effects are great, the filming is great and the movies all grate.
January 3, 201411 yr Titanic The Shining (didn't scare me one bit) Lincoln The Big Lebowski (and I love the Coen Brothers' films as well - just couldn't stand this one) Forrest Gump (one long, tedious music video) The Matrix (boring) Braveheart
