Biography

Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll (pronounced: [ʃaˈkiɾa isaˈβel meβa'ɾak riˈpol]; born February 2, 1977), known professionally as Shakira (English /ʃəˈkɪərə/, Spanish: [ʃaˈkiɾa]), is a Colombian singer-songwriter, dancer, record producer, choreographer and model. Born and raised in Barranquilla, she began performing in school, demonstrating Latin, Arabic, and rock and roll influences and belly dancing abilities. Shakira released her first studio albums, Magia and Peligro, in the early 1990s, failing to attain commercial success; however, she rose to prominence in Latin America with her major-label debut, Pies Descalzos (1996), and her fourth album, Dónde Están los Ladrones? (1998).

Shakira entered the English-language market with her fifth album, Laundry Service (2001), which has sold over 20 million copies worldwide. Its lead single, "Whenever, Wherever", became the best-selling single of 2002. Her success was solidified with her sixth and seventh albums Fijación Oral, Vol. 1 and Oral Fixation, Vol. 2 (2005), the latter of which spawned the best-selling song of the 21st century, "Hips Don't Lie". Shakira's eighth and ninth albums, She Wolf (2009) and Sale el Sol (2010), received critical praise but suffered from limited promotion due to her strained relationship with label Epic Records. Her official song for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, "Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)", became the biggest-selling World Cup song of all time. With over 550 million views, its music video is the eighth most-watched video on YouTube. Since 2013, Shakira has served as a coach on the American version of The Voice, having appeared in two of its six seasons.

Shakira has won many awards including five MTV Video Music Awards, two Grammy Awards, eight Latin Grammy Awards, seven Billboard Music Awards, twenty-eight Billboard Latin Music Awards and has been Golden Globe-nominated. She has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and she is the highest-selling Colombian artist of all time, having sold a total of 125 million records worldwide, over 70 million albums and 55 million singles. Her U.S. album sales stand at 9.9 million. Outside of her work in the music industry, Shakira is also involved in philanthropic activities through charity work and benefit concerts, notably her Pies Descalzos Foundation, her performance at the "Clinton Global Initiative" created by former U.S. President Bill Clinton, and her invitation to the Oval Office by President Barack Obama in February 2010 to discuss early childhood development. In 2013, Shakira was listed on Forbes as one of the 100 most powerful women in the world. - Wikipedia

Discussion Thread Here

 at Paloma's fall. I don't mind though because it's not a patch on her previous singles.

For some reason I keep forgetting this song exists.

I am so excited for Shakira's album! I changed my mind completely about this song a few days after the video premiered

Can't Remember to Forget You

Not up there with Hips Don't Lie & Whenever, Wherever for me but it was definitely a grower!

"Can't Remember To Forget You" has ended up having a fairly acceptable run in the end, despite the week 2 and 3 drops.

I wish they didn't shorten "Can't Remember To Forget You".

Biography

Nick Mulvey is an English musician, singer and songwriter who studied music in Havana, Cuba. He played the Hang as a founder member of 2008 Mercury Prize nominated band Portico Quartet, until 2011 when he left to pursue his career as a singer-songwriter. As a solo artist, Mulvey released his first EP The Trellis in November 2012, and his second Fever to the Form in July 2013. On his recent Summer-Autumn tour with Laura Marling, he performed in symphony halls across the UK, naming Marling as a great influence to his solo music.

At the age of 19, Nick moved to Havana, Cuba to study music and art. The course was intensive, formal, and incredibly technical, yet the evenings were spent jamming and drinking rum with his fellow students who congregated at the school from all over the world.

On returning to the UK, Nick enrolled at the School of Oriental and African Studies to study Ethnomusicology. This course gave him great insight in to the cultural and historical context of many styles of music, in which he specialised in West and Central African music in particular. By this time, Nick was hooked and threw himself feet first in to finding out as much as he could about all styles of music. - Wikipedia

2014 26 Cucurucu -1-

'Cucurucu' Gorgeous song, so glad to see it charting decently!

2nd top 40 hit by a Sound of 2014 act excluding features.

I'm not quite sure of what I think of this at the moment, will probably be a grower.

Oh this very different :o reminds me of the Godfather films

First time hearing this...It's different.

First time hearing this - I like it, pretty decent track to be fair.

Ooh, I've heard this before, didn't think it would even get near the top 40 :o Really lovely song though, nice to see something a bit different charting.

Loving the guitar on this track!

I thought this would be a cover of this Latin American standard:

I never expected this to chart. Very different to most other chart hits, not a bad thing of course but I'm not a big fan.
