Posted June 5, 201412 yr I think there was a thread about this ages ago but why not restart it with the discussion of Zechonia's trademark theatrical rock type sound, which it possibly shares with Seyetana from time to time. Do you feel like your country has a distinct sound? And have you made a conscious decision to build some sort of identity or even to avoid one? For me I used to be known for my Scandipop entries but then the website Scandipop became SO overused as an entry source that I figured there weren't many discoveries left to be made from there. So I sort of made a concerted effort to avoid that site from early 2012 and ever since I feel like I've gone a bit all over the place with my entries, but they generally have some sort of link to either the pop or dance genres (apart from Hozier and Public Service Broadcasting). But Scandipop not so much anymore, the only Scandi entry I've sent in the last year and a half was an ancient Danish track by an old bag that flopped hard
June 5, 201412 yr I'm not sure, I feel like Persephonia does have a bit of its own sound (evidenced by the fact that certain countries practically always vote for my songs and certain other countries never do for example ~) but at the same time I send a decent variety of types of songs (or at least I like to think I do :P They sound varied to me but I can't speak for others). All pretty much within the scope of 'electronic music' with a couple of exceptions but that's a pretty diverse tag.
June 5, 201412 yr According to Aeroche Ashton's sound is 'inoffensive foreign language pop'~ This year I have been making an effort to send entries that tick the latter three boxes at the very least!
June 5, 201412 yr I deliberately vary my entries as much as possible, though recently been a bit more mellowish EDM. I'd rather see a varied contest with loads of different genres than one like the one semi last year when I wanted to shout "Enough!" as one forgettable dance track blanded into another endlessly. I love dance, but not to the exclusion of everything else. I'm more likely to give points to countries that take a risk, if it's a choice between decent-but-soundalike-generic or decent-but-interesting. The ones I love will always hit me in the heart though, and move me, or excite me in some way. This one is a good varied contest and the quality high. It's going to be a DNQ bloodbath!
June 5, 201412 yr It seems, based on especially the entries that I love and no-one else does, that yes, my traditional sound has definitely been somewhere in the rock/metal area, I certainly do go outside that from time to time, although that tends to be indie-pop if anything and those entries don't stand out from the pack as much because that's what everyone else enters. For the next contest, which will be my 30th, so far I'm trying to find another rock song in order to celebrate the milestone by sticking true to my 'sound', which I haven't done on my last couple of entries, so yes, I do feel like I have a sound, even though I only go to it on about half my entries. Things like 'Megitsune' exemplify the crazy sound I like in my entries, which to be honest is a far more consistent theme, most of my entries are big and in your face whether they're rock or not. I barely ever send any subtle things ('Blood' and 'Paradise Awaits' are actually the most subtle I can think of, now compare that to any one of the indie crowd).
June 5, 201412 yr I think I have a bit of a catchy pop-dance sound that I often send. But without being TOO tacky.
June 5, 201412 yr I tend to go between pop, dance-pop and singer-songwriter type songs normally, think I've covered all three quite well this year ~
June 5, 201412 yr I tried to send a variety of different genres at first, my first year included songs like choral dubstep, reggae, guitar ballads, electronic and pop rock, it alas didn't often go down too well. I'd say I've latched on to the indie/slightly left field dance and electronic sound since then, but I like to try and send a variety of entries and steer away from the generic dance-pop sound (though I have treaded that ground sometimes). I'd say it's generally a 'blogosphere' sound. Edited June 5, 201412 yr by Chez Wombat
June 5, 201412 yr I'd say as Vojvodina I definitely did, basically electropop, mostly female, mostly big pop choruses. As Altyr it's never really strayed too far from that sound, but I do think it's just more general 'female pop' these days, which isn't really a distinct sound and just generally blends in with most other nations.
June 5, 201412 yr i guess leftfield dance???? deffo dance music every month bar a few indiepop exceptions
June 5, 201412 yr I think Jamvale's sound is sort of medolic dance with a proper banger now and again. I don't really know though. What do YOU think?
June 5, 201412 yr Oh I try to avoid easy categorisation. I can't say this sentence without sounding like a bit of an arsehole.
June 5, 201412 yr I don't think I really have a particular sound tbh. It probably would be easier on the basis of success to stick with the same tried and tested genre but I like to change things up regularly for my own happiness more than anything else (guess it shows by having Zechonia and Budtar in my top three voters!) although recently I've been into kind of the 8-bit dreamy electronic sounds from Wave Racer, Up To No Good, TastyTreat etc. that I don't think any other country has really sent regularly so that could be a thing? literally just a stream of conciousness.
June 6, 201412 yr My nation's sound is relatively easy to figure and that it's foreign (with occasional English languaged) pop with a repetitive lyric and instrumental catch to it. Bar that, I'd also tag dramatic songs into my country (see IU, Ailee and Indila).
June 6, 201412 yr I'd say Danaelanda's sound is club-friendly floorfillers, the only thing we've recently sent that doesn't completely fit that genre was Mar, and that flopped, so clearly the sound works for me.
June 6, 201412 yr I think Jamvale's sound is sort of medolic dance with a proper banger now and again. I don't really know though. What do YOU think? def melodic. That's a very good thing in my eyes B-)
