Posted March 22, 201510 yr http://i.imgur.com/DVYUzwV.jpg Kendrick holding off Sam Smith in the album chart today is easily one of my favourite chart moments/shocks since i have been following them. An album that wasn't even set to be released 7 days ago, only being available on physical release for half the week and from an artist who i honestly believed was only supported by a small internet community rising to the top (helped with a HEAP of critical acclaim and publicity). It has made me even more happy because it has happened to a very important album that i'm sure we'll be hearing about for a long time to come and for an artist that has long been overlooked by most. Do you have any personal favourite chart moments, be it a huge shock for a favourite artist of yours securing a #1 or top 10. Or any moments in chart history that you remember fondly?
March 22, 201510 yr I remember Poker Face climbing to number 1 unexpectedly when it looked like peaking at 3 that week. In terms of artists, Robyn being number 1 was a lovely surprise at the time.
March 22, 201510 yr I have to go for the obvious - the 'Spectrum' remix reaching No. 1 was genuinely so unexpected but amazing. I remember being so shocked with each climb on iTunes.
March 22, 201510 yr Also Loreen going to iTunes #1 followed by Rudimental / John Newman going there and official #1
March 22, 201510 yr Price Tag's second week at #1. I was convinced it would be Gaga or Chipmunk with Jessie at #3. Obviously PJ & Duncan / Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead being at #1 and #2 in 2013.
March 22, 201510 yr I'd count Kendrick as a great one too (despite not having listened to the album yet but the competition is Sam so...). Another #1 album 'shock' that sticks out was HAIM's 'Days Are Gone' (one of my favourites of recent years ) narrowly beating Justin Timberlake's 'The 20/20 Experience - 2 of 2' to the top as I believe the latter had been leading all week and I certainly was under the impression it'd get there officially.
March 22, 201510 yr Author Price Tag's second week at #1. I was convinced it would be Gaga or Chipmunk with Jessie at #3. I said FAVOURITE you traitorous one! I was devastated at that as much as i really liked 'Price Tag' </3
March 22, 201510 yr  I said FAVOURITE you traitorous one! I was devastated at that as much as i really liked 'Price Tag' </3 Exactly, it stopped the worst single of her career from reaching #1, as well as Chipmunk.
March 22, 201510 yr On a similar note to Kendrick I remember being very shocked Kanye got to #1 with 'Yeezus' - it was released midweek and was not #1 on the Friday mids IIRC, so it actually actively overcame the weekend effect to get there :o Also similar to Kendrick in that it was the follow-up to an album that is very highly regarded but didn't do much chart-wise (both 'My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy' and 'good kid, m.A.A.d city' peaked at #16 in fact :magic:) Example JUST edging out Maroon 5 with 'Stay Awake' was a great one too as they were at the time my favourite and least favourite songs of the year and it was looking almost inevitable that M5 would have caught him. Then Rihanna also blocking M5 from what looked even more like a certain week at #1 a couple of weeks later despite a midweek release was great as well.
March 22, 201510 yr Olly Murs - Please Don't Let Me Go getting to number one over Katy Perry - Teenage Dream! Definitely wasn't expecting that one! Retrospectively I love both tracks but obviously Katy was already established so this was huge for Olly. Also 'Groovejet (If This Ain't Love)' beating 'Out of Your Mind' a brand new Victoria Beckham track to number one. The better song triumphed!

March 22, 201510 yr One Direction's Little Things making #1 was a really good surprise for me - it was only released as part of the Take Me Home album on the Monday (so it lost a day of sales and wasn't available straight after the X Factor performance for maximum impact then). Wasn't #1 on any of the midweeks either and managed to top both Bruno Mars (Locked Out of Heaven) and Little Mix (DNA)!
March 22, 201510 yr Meet Me Halfway beating Happy was a big shock for me. I said FAVOURITE you traitorous one!
March 22, 201510 yr - As mentioned before, Spectrum reaching the top spot! - Nero's "Promises" smashing past JLS & Cher Lloyd to get #1  - "Walking With Elephants" charting in the top 10! - Unrelated to the official chart, but Bring Me The Horizon's "Drown" reaching the iTunes #1 *.*
March 22, 201510 yr Oh and the whole success of Daft Punk in 2013 - they hadn't had much buildup or hype pre release so the hugeness of Get Lucky was unexpected.
March 22, 201510 yr Main one for me was Rage Against The Machine beating Joe McElderry to the 2009 Christmas number 1, at the time I was sure that Joe would win as the campaign seemed to die down towards the end of the week, seeing it confirmed was a magical moment <3 That chart/the week leading up to that was genuinely my favourite ever chart week in all the nine years I've closely followed them. I guess both Coldplay number 1s were quite unexpected by me at least so they were great moments, particularly with Paradise as I was convinced that that song's chance to be a huge hit had gone.
March 22, 201510 yr ^ Ah yes of course @ Rage/Joe! A bizarre but brilliant moment, one that actually got me interested in the charts again properly I do agree with 'Get Lucky' as well. At the time i imagined DP's comeback single might've managed similar success to David Bowie's "Where Are We Now", but it was astonishing how the song became so instantly huge!
