In future there will be six midweek charts published by the OCC. There will be a mini midweek chart update on a Friday afternoon with sales covering a Friday morning. It will be made available to the industry before the new weekly sales chart has been made public. Details of this Friday update are very sketchy and I can't work out if it might simply be limited to new releases (especially albums).

If this Friday update is one of the six midweek updates then there will be no midweek update on either a Saturday or Sunday (there will be midweek updates each day from Monday to Thursday). If it is not part of the six midweek updates that means there will be a midweek chart published for every day from Saturday to Thursday.

Martin Talbot, Managing Director of the OCC, made the following comments about the the chart date moving to a Friday as well as changes to the midweek charts. They were published last week in Music Week

Thanks!

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet but Nathan Sykes apparently sold minus 297 copies yesterday. Lots of returns from unsatisfied customers?

He should know when he's not Wanted.

Geddit???

And a great no1 to start the new era with!

Exactly. David Zowie won't get near what Shine's overall sales and will generally be quite a flash in the pan hit. 'Shine' would have a been a very memorable song to start the era with.

I wouldn't write off 'House...' as a flash-in-the-pan hit just yet. If it wasn't for an album coming next week I assume 'Shine' would be more frontloaded!

I'm Glad You Came to this thread but you've really hit an All Time Low with that joke.

Ed Sheeran number 1 album for the new era is a wonderful start. I am all for Ed Sheeran knocking Sam Smith of the years best seller list. It could be said i am a fan of both, however, i feel X is the better album of the two.

No. We want an album which was released this year to be the years biggest selling album, not an album which was released last year. It was like that when Simply Red's album "Stars" was the biggest selling album in 1991 and 1992

I've been told, I won't be getting any other chart info over the weekend full stop with the new change.

As I said in a previous post, I'm not sure if we get anything for today, especially a day before they get published tomorrow.. so it seems Weds could be the last update of the week, for this week.

Do we indeed? Frankly I couldn't care less.

Either way the top-2 albums are on ~500k now. They should be on 700-800k by the end of the year, and I hope we have a strong enough album which will outsell that amount in Q4.

Not really a great start at all. It would be nice for an album from this year, to be #1, not something that only indicates how stale the charts can be.

Certainly, if Adele finally releases! :P

I get the distinct impression still that even if Adele were to suddenly release a new album tomorrow, it would do a Dido and be the 'Safe Trip Home' to 21's 'Life for Rent'. There's no way you can replicate that kind of success three times over. Twice, yes, but not thrice.

Even if Years & Years don't get number 1 tomorrow there's a strong case that they might next week, even with Little Mix out. They've got that interactive video thing happening on Channel 4 tomorrow night and their album being released will boost their chances a bit more.

I don't think so. They'll have decent sales at #2 and will probably sell more in week 2, but Little Mix might have up to 30/40k in pre-orders.

But it wouldn't be the third time. 19 didn't sell like hot cakes until 21 came out. The notion that Adele's new album would perform like Safe Trip Home is absurd.

I could see Adele's next album selling around 500,000 - 1,500,000 in total. Which would be fantastic sales for a normal album in 2015, but given 21's success I think people would see it as an underperformance,
I don't think people would see it as an underperformance if it has a chart-run like 1-1-1-1-1-2-3-2-3-2-1-2-1-2-2 etc even with 900k sales. But if it has a chart-run like 1-1-1-2-3-5-7-12-14-17-20 or even 1-2-7-9-13 etc it will be.

Ed Sheeran was the top-selling album of last year. Surely it would be a bit better to have a different album at #1 for this year? Not the very same album..
