The problem is, I am of the firm belief that the government don’t believe that anyone other than them *will* get a chance to use these powers. Which is what scares me the most.

It’s like Poland and Hungary. They believe they’re invincible and cannot be taken down by the opposition because they’ve tilted the board in their favour. We’re a step behind them and they’re a step behind Russia and Belarus and their paper democracies

Despite warnings from NGOs that this move will put the lives of hundreds of thousands of the most desperate and poverty-stricken people around the world severely at risk, the Tories promote "Global Britain" by getting rid of the 0.7% pledge on overseas aid. Presumably that's to finance nationalist projects like Brexit and awarding multi millionaire contracts to their mates.

Why do you think the Tories would care about that? After all, they've got a boat to build.

Liked Theresa Mays speech this afternoon during the debate about keeping the foreign aid budget at the lower level but hard to take from the PM who said there wasn’t a magic money tree, what’s 3 billion eh?

Yeah, exactly. I'm not buying this supposed magic transformation that so many others seem to have done.

Although I guess it comes to something if this current crop are so awful + morally bankrupt that even Theresa May denounces them.

Sunak ended the debate quoting the Bible verses on the merits of charity to justify their complete lack of charity and this is who the GBP want as PM.

Oh yeah the foreign aid as well, as ever, no good argument for not putting it back to prior levels and yet they do it anyway because they've got more important prestige projects and corruption to spend it on.

May and other old-school conservatives/classical liberals (any with actual ideological principles that when laid out don't look visibly monstrous, just paternalistically Malthusian, which is still bad but excusable to the traditional Tory base) are starting to go against this government's more brazen attempts at trashing democracy because they realise that once the government does end up finally falling short and the current crop of populism runs out of answers, they don't want to be tied to it. It's muted for now but it's good it's there, we want some divisions to be showing.

Exactly Johnson is doing everything to appeal to the populists working class vote from foreign aid to putting bunting at Downing Street for the Euros final

The cracks are already showing, just look at the mixed reaction to some of the newer Conservatism public stance to the England players taking the knee. There was an article I read yesterday which suggested as long as Johnson is popular people will keep supporting him, in the Party. But there is a growing view that the public no longer wants Culture War and it's beginning to be really dangerous ground for the Tories.

Look how many leaks have come out recently, or Tory MPs grassing up MPs to the media about comments they make privately. Going to be fun to watch from here on-in.

I'm not a football fan but thank God the World Cup is next year and so that there will be more influence of our wonderful progressive team over the political situation. Bet most Tories wanted them to lose early on in the competition so that they could say "Don't play politics eh". This team realise that our Government is despicable (so much so that they rejected an official reception with the PM) and are willing to take them on as they know our political parties aren't.

The bigger problem is the next World Cup is in Qatar..

Lawl, according to the Daily Mail (and an "unnamed source at No. 10", of course) the England squad apparently never wanted a reception at Downing Street unless they won the Euros.

In my opinion it was ridiculous to even consider a reception unless they won. You don't reward failure.

In other news, at a time when it wants to abolish foreign aid, the Government has spent £73,000 topping up it's fine wines and champagnes cellar which is used to entertain at Government functions and receptions. It now contains a record 32,000 bottles of wine, mostly in cellars at Lancaster House but with some in the cellars of No.10 too. White and champagne is drunk far more than red.

And of course you’d regard the greatest international performance in 55 years a failure. I like to believe that the team wouldn’t meet with that moron regardless because they’ve all got too much integrity.

Judging by the current Cabinet, Johnson clearly doesn't agree.

Stop, just stop.

Labour MP Dawn Butler has been told to leave the Commons for the day by the Speaker after refusing to withdraw her remark that "Boris Johnson has lied and led to the Commons and the public over and over again."

Unparliamentary language is a ridiculous and anachronistic holdover that is not prepared for the consequences of dishonourable shysters inhabiting the Westminster system coupled with the way modern news is reported and public reactions and credulity.

Good on Dawn Butler.
