#teamSigalathisweek

#1 for Sigala this week, though it will be relatively close (closer than previously thought anyway) as Bieber will definitely be number 1 on streaming and is likely to do another 70K. I fully expect Bieber to return to #1 the following week.

I see Ella Eyre is cashing in on the Rugby World Cup with a much needed cover version. It usually charts at around #15 if/when England get to the final, and in 2003 it had a very weird chart run indeed (as a result of us actually winning!)

Any sign of Kiri Te Kanawa? She's usually knocking about at the same time.

Sigala/Bieber have the Top 2 on lock, though I get the feeling that top 2 will be a LOT closer than most people are expecting, Easy Love will clearly be big though it won't be unstoppable (and like Doctor Blind said I'm sure 'What Do You Mean' will be back on top next week)

I wonder if Sigala could be the final ever #1 to be a held-back release. If we are to believe that all the labels are going to be On Air/On Sale by the end of this month (as one article said they would be), then it seems like it will be. I still fear that the UK will slip back into old habits just like last time we tried On Air/On Sale, but there does seem like a bigger effort this time than last.
Sigala will be the best number 1 in so long (the last few months have been grim times for the charts, especially with the number 1s), really hope it gets there.

They definitely seem to have been working a lot more this time round - aside 5SOS, not sure what happened there - which is an encouraging sign that they may be the way forward. Back in 2011 I think 'Price Tag' was the only one that worked without fault. There does need to be a bit more thought on how to go about them though - 1D is proof that a video needs to be no later than the second week of release to avoid a "non-number one" tag or whatever. Held-back releases still have their uses but not when a song is so obviously going to be a hit and holding it back becomes damaging to its success.

Streaming is now 70% of the market, a year ago it was 50%. Single sales have dropped to 2008 levels already, I suspect the record industry doesn't really have any choice. Especially as you can't really pre-order streams! No doubt the record companies will find some way of manipulating the chart another way though...

Which number 1 was the most grim in your opinion?

Sigala will suffer a little bit by not streaming on apple music as far as I know as apple music haven't done a deal with ministry of sound yet

What a time to be alive!
