Possibly but he's not Olly Murs after all.

You cannot compare December (and pre-Christmas) sales with August sales with any artists. That's a totally not fair comparison. :)

Here's an indication of what the Christmas #1 would be if you took away the X Factor winners, charity singles and campaigns that have dominated since 2004:

2014: 181,545 Mark Ronson ft. Bruno Mars - Uptown Funk (#2)

2013: 63,858 Pharrell Williams - Happy (#2)

2012: 88,400 will.i.am ft. Britney Spears - Scream & Shout (#3)

2011: 50,622 Coldplay - Paradise (#5)

2010: 104,487 Rihanna ft. Drake - What's My Name? (#2)

2009: 61,677 Lady Gaga - Bad Romance (#3)

2008: 72,417 Leona Lewis - Run (#3) / 47,092 Beyonce - If I Were a Boy (#4)

2007: 30,887 Leona Lewis - Bleeding Love (#3) 28,419 The Pogues ft. Kirsty MacColl - Fairytale of New York (#4)

2006: 55,559 Take That - Patience (#2)

2005: 159,815 Nizlopi - The JCB Song (#2)

2004: 27,922 Ronan Keating - Father & Son (#2)

I say indication, because there's no knowing who may have released if it weren't a foregone conclusion who the #1 would be, plus some songs may have sold more if it weren't for people choosing to support another song, or even sold less (in the case of Nizlopi, pretty sure people campaigned for that to be #1 in place of Shayne Ward.

Would have been fantastic if 'Uptown Funk' got Christmas #1 over Ben Haenow - pretty sure it had a chance towards the end of the week and people definitely anticipated it before the first sales flashes. If Ben didn't have physicals, in the same way NHS Choir don't, 'Uptown Funk' would have got it.

Uptown Funk & Happy would have made epic Xmas no1s as would Nizlopi which seemed like a seasonal release!

I hope the no1 this week breaks Saviours Days sales of 102k.
What were the sales of Ghost Stories?

Cumulative sales are 600k+ but sold 543,500 last year (to finish fifth in the year-end chart) however was released in May as opposed to December for AHFOD.

The Xmas number one is not really the target for "good Xmas songs" is it? If you are trying to write a lasting Xmas number, you're looking at charting every year for the rest of your life - nice little earner.

We don't have mid information for today at the moment (and it may not come at all)

She was #12 in yesterday's update though.

Do we think this week's number one will be much north of 100k? To think the Christmas No. 1 ten years ago sold 742k.

I think one of the 2 challengers will break 100k - just. Some years the songs aren't there to sell 750k or whatever it just happens like that.

Think Mariahs streams today will certainly get her into the top 10!

Certainly. Noddy Holder earns £800,000 every year for Merry Xmas Everybody, from downloads, radio plays and inclusion on Now Xmas etc. That's just him. Jona Lewie earns 300 grand a year too. Nice pensions as Noddy says.

If Mariah was #12 yesterday then she should definitely make it especially as she's taking off on iTunes more today  sadly The Pogues might miss out again though :(

An early warning guys, sales are not guaranteed tomorrow, there could be an OCC report in the evening, MW sales report could be added late evening, or as late as Monday or Tuesday morning. Please do not ask for them, they will be posted when they are available.

On that note have a Merry Christmas everyone and join us in the morning at 10am for the Christmas Top 40 chart to be revealed by Radio 1, the full top 100 chart will be online after 5:45 in the evening by OCC.

What position was Band Aid yesterday?, hope it makes top 40 again at last.

I would love to see how this is broken down!

Is everyone going to be listening tomorrow to the chart? I might actually tune in as I won't be working - will be a good listen IMO. Who is hosting on here?

I would say the OCC will have the no1 sales especially if the NHS makes it as the media will be reporting it.

I'm no Belieber but why can't the Christmas #1 actually be a normal song for once rather than a piece of dirge that can be released for charity at any other time of year? The catalogue of Christmas Number Ones isn't exactly good as it is but at least in the past sometimes the biggest artists of the year would bag it (The Spice Girls, Whitney, Queen) but ever since 2005 the fun has been killed - whether it's because of an XF winner or a crap charity single.

Today's streams for the Xmas songs won't be reflected in the final chart sadly as they're always a day behind, so they'll be upweighted from earlier in the week when the Xmas songs were being streamed less :(

But of a joke that really so it won't reflect their actual popularity. Will 2 big days of Xmas streaming be used in next weeks chart then?

The actual Thursday data from Spotify and Apple Music just doesn't get used at all, it doesn't get carried over. They upweight the data for the other 6 days based on the trend shown and essentially estimate Thursday figures. This happens with pure sales too at times but not on such a frequent basis I imagine. Christmas Day's streaming will count to next week's chart though.
