I saw that Dobbo recently bumped another thread about foreign language songs and I had no recollection of this thread that I inspired back in 2016! :o Reding through this thread was really a wow moment… anyway I would like to update the thread for accuracy of course, so please can someone help me to collate a concise list of non-English hits from the last 6-7 years that I can add to the opening page.

It’s my hope to present a review of a random selection of only 21st century non-English hits to impact the UK charts soon in the 21st Century Throwback thread, so look out for that soon! ;)

Also, if Colm read this… I want to see that playlist again please!

Most of Jimin's "Smeraldo Garden Marching Band" is in Korean, as is "That That" by Suga ft. PSY. Some of the others do have Korean lyrics but are sung mostly in English at a glance

I'm pretty surprised Bad Bunny nor Rosalía have managed to get low top 30/40 (at least) charting solo singles/without English features here :( They seem to be massive everywhere else.

The UK public's loss for refusing to embrace both of them. Makes me wish Radio 1 actually did have more influence over the charts because they have kept trying to make ROSALÍA happen, bless.

They did at least both make the top 100 on the albums chart with their most recent releases.

Here's the ones I can think of off the top of my head from 2017 to now (just top 40 hits):

Bad Bunny - Mia

Billie Eilish - Lo Vas A Olvidar

BTS - Idol

BTS - Life Goes On

BTS - On

CNCO - Reggaeton Lento [Little Mix version which charted has English parts though]

Luis Fonsi - Despacito [peaked at #4 before the Bieber credit]

J Balvin - Mi Gente

Kaarija - Cha Cha Cha

Kalush - Stefania

Manneskin - Zitti E Buoni

Sidhu Moose Wala - 47

I know BTS/Blackpink/Jimin had other hits but they had significantly more English parts than the ones I listed, not sure how far you're stretching the criteria for non-English.

I'll get my thinking cap on for some more.

It would be great to have a definitive list compiled of all foreign language top 40 hits. I suppose a good start would be to trawl through these threads. If I ever get the time I might give it a go although who knows when that might happen, if anyone else feels up to the task then feel free!

Just like Regeton Lento, Enrique - Subeme la Radio ended up with English verses and Spanish chorus for the UK

Rosalia & Billie Elish - Lo Vas a Olvidar, is 95% Spanish but also has a bit of English

Rosalia-TKN with Travis Scott is maybe 75% Spanish but also has some English

Always suprises me when read articles about bad bunny being biggest in the world but then nothing in the UK
love nwantiti (ah ah ah) by ckay was that part English?

it has a few words in Igbo (Nigerian language) but seems to be mostly in English

Luis Fonsi - Despacito [peaked at #4 before the Bieber credit]
Note that this is just a matter of OCC crediting not the versions' popularity; it only charted in the UK once the remix came out. The original peaked at #43 on the UK weekly Spotify chart (while the remix was #1; before the remix it only got to #106).

Some afrobeats hits could arguably have a case to be considered foreign language hits - 'Last Last' for example is sung in a mix of Yoruba and Nigerian Pidgin English (I think), it borrows so much vocabulary/grammar from West African languages that even a lot of the English parts are probably indecipherable to most people outside the region. I guess the same could be said for a lot of reggae/dancehall songs as well. (and to be fair even some unambiguously English songs are so full of slang that they might as well be a foreign language to people outside their associated culture lol so maybe this isn't a rabbit hole I should even start going down)

Still kind of surprising that it charted at all before the remix came out.

  • 1 year later...

Hi all

I am new to the party on this thread and found it whilst researching for my Foreign language songs show on my Internet Radio Station on Sunday.

There are loads of great tunes to choose from. I've looked through it a few times now.

I know it only made number 87 in the UK charts but I thought the Gipsy Kings - Bamboléo would be on the list.

Best wishes,

Tiffer

Thank you for the added comments. The opening post is in need of updating and I will try and get onto that over the weekend.

In the meantime, please see this unofficial compilation that myself and a few other members of BuzzJack created earlier in 2024 congaining various UK and European hits;
