I think this goes to show that being at the top of iTunes' "Hot Songs" list is potentially just as important, if not more important than being 59p. Hailee and NEIKED were both in the top few Hot Songs, and both have rocketed over 10 places in less than 2 days - quite a feat when we are talking about positions at the top the chart. Likewise Maroon 5 and Fifth Harmony, also featured in Hot Songs, have seen decent boosts.

 

On the other hand you have Olly Murs being 59p and falling down the chart. So arguably visibility on the home page is more important than 59p when you only get one or the other. The 59p boost only really kicks in when you get featured in the 59p section on the home page as then you have the best of both worlds.

How do iTunes calculate the hot songs list anyway? surely the hottest songs on iTunes are just the ones that people are spending their dough on the most!

It's not calculated, I assume labels have to pay to get a song featured there!

It's a mixture of songs that are quickly climbing, the very best sellers and new songs.
