Didn't Sugababes end up selling more than their debut weeks with a few of their albums? I remember them being in the top 10 when Chemistry charted at 11.

Yeah, Girls Aloud did too! Some of their albums sold 100k+ over Christmas periods.

The Pussycat Dolls - PCD [#12, 31 December 2005] (over 132k)

A few others were close to selling 100k+, mostly so Chemistry which must have been 95k+ in 2005.

Love stats like this, thanks!

I don't remember Girls Aloud really becoming *massive* until their Greatest Hits and then again from The Promise, but really they were selling quite a lot even with modest chart placings.

I agree that 'Chemistry' most likely sold over 95k in 2005 as it was at number 17 when the top 16 albums that week all sold over 100k.

Yeah, I noticed a subsequent MW saying the Top 16 managed 100k+ but, at the time, I think it was widely estimated that Chemistry had sold 100k, so for it to be just under makes sense.

You're welcome! Yeah I know what you mean. I suppose they had a solid fanbase and knew how to take advantage of the Xmas period, but post-Greatest Hits, they seemed to be able to do both that and receive good longevity, so I'd say they probably did still get bigger as a band as time went on.

The Vamps are actually quite close to #25, not sure if they'll make the play zone again but it's not impossible!
Any chance of Louisa improving on her peak this week (even if only by one place?)

Sadly not :(

Has this album underperformed for Metallica? Aren't they bigger album sellers than this? Or am I imagining it? (Even taking into consideration the decline in sales)

Their overall worldwide album sales for this will definitely be lower than their last release, Death Magnetic, in 2008.

There are a number of reasons to explain that though.

The gap between albums may have been longer this time (it was only five years between St. Anger and DM) but one thing to consider is that Death Magnetic marked a return to a style of music (thrash metal) which Metallica had not released a whole album of since 1989. There was a real excitement and buzz around that in the metal community. Moreover, St. Anger was critically panned, so DM was a real return to form. There was an eight year gap this time, yes, but Metallica have very much kept themselves busy during that period, releasing an EP, a collaboration with Lou Reed (the largely terrible 'Lulu') and a 3D film, 'Through The Never'.

Put simply, while this album has been very well received, the level of hype was nowhere near what it was for Death Magnetic.

However, keeping in mind this is in a climate of lower albums sales, they have STILL sold enough for them to have topped the album charts in 57 countries with this latest release. Fair play to Little Mix for halting them in the UK, but on a worldwide scale they really have not underperformed at all. There are very few rock bands - and no other metal bands - who could even approach that chart performance.

am i counting right? Ball/Boe did more than L Mix yesterday!!!?? been saying it for days but I really think Ball&Boe are gonna be the Xmas #1 album

They did indeed! Yes I could see them being in with a shout of Xmas #1 too. Surely there's some big TV promo lined up?

I think Louisa will peak next week. Her streaming is picking up again and she will have a small XF effect

What's she doing on XF? (As someone who hasn't really been following it this year)

Oh.. I meant just the Talk Talk advert thing, her song often gets played and gives it a small boost.

Hope Justice can make the top 40, it's a great album IMO
