So prob 70k in tomorrow’s midweeks. Flop.

Certified silver in opening week isn't anything to scream flop at.

Sam will have plenty of singles lined up to sell the album so I'm not worried at opening sales.

If Last Christmas does go to #1, what will then become the biggest-selling #2 of all time?

The CHART SAVIOUR himself, All of Me by John Legend *.*

No way :o (I actually still like that song so could have been worse!)

Not a big Sam Smith fan but the declarations of a Flop for his Album are premature to say the least - it strikes me he is more of a steady seller anyway, the type of Artist that isn't the favourite of many but popular with a lot.

nobody is calling it a flop, just an underperformance on week 1, which no one cannot deny

so All of Me has sold more than Fairytale of New York or All I Want for xmas?

There are at least 2 mentions of 'flop' in this thread so there are people labelling it as such.

Anyone think it won't finish in the Top 5 best sellers of the year?

The flop comments are tongue-in-cheek, it's of course not a flop but he set his stall up so high with his first album he was never gonna match that so relatively speaking it is a disappointment but in reality it's far from it.

All Of Me already has overtaken Last Christmas's sales when you include streaming, I believe?

I would so be here for a Last Christmas Xmas #1 campaign though, could feasibly do it as it will get massive streams and with the unfortunate timing of George Michael's death being on Christmas Day it seems apt.

With ease! He'll clear half a million by the time the years out.

These opening sales *are* a bit of a flop relative to what you'd expect from his 2nd album debut though... have people forgotten how massive his first album was? The followups to such gigantic and long-running debuts typically have a gigantic first week, this one looks like it won't even match the first week of his debut! There's every chance in the world this album will still go on to sell well in the long run but this first week seriously has to be a bit of an embarrassment for him.

These sales would be great for nearly any other artist but we are talking about Sam Smith here.

Exactly. This is like if Ed Sheeran only sold 200k with ÷ on first week, brilliant sales but it could have been so much better.
Huge stretch to call it 'an embarrassment'. It is still successfully selling in an era when album sales aren't that high. The thirst on this forum for Sam to fail is way too much.

Except for the fact ÷ was his 3rd album.

Emeli Sandé is probably the best to compare with for Sam Smith. Both have made a foray into alternative genres ("Read All About It", "Latch", "La La La") and had massive debuts, plastered everywhere.

Emeli underperformed but I can't see Sam underperforming to this level overall. That said I haven't heard the album, his debut was packed with top tracks - I'd go as far as to say "Too Good At Goodbyes" is his worst single yet (bar "Omen"). The remixes for TGAG are so much better (not the official ones).

do you guys think sam's album has another hit on it? i've listened to the album a few times and cannot see what could be a hit

But album sales can still be high for individual artists and this is one case where they really should be... 'album sales aren't that high' isn't an excuse for these kind of big comebacks.

I agree, Album is shaping up to be an underperformance based on initial expectations but some people are a bit too keen to label it a flop. I suggest we reserve judgement on this until (at least) the end of the year.

The problem with Sam is, unlike Adele or Ed Sheeran, he has a strong unlikeability factor for a lot of people, and I think that puts some people off. Certainly I was expecting at least 150k first week for him as a minimum.
