With the end of 2017 only a few days away which year would you say was your favourite for following the UK charts? for me I would say 2012 because every week had multiple songs battling for number one and the chart didn't seem stale then. I also liked how you could look ahead to upcoming weeks to see which songs were going to be released and following the progress of newly released songs felt enjoyable and fun back then and there was also a sense of real popularity amongst the songs in the chart.

2011. The dubstep tunes and drum and bass tunes were faves of mine back then, was disappointed quite a few of the dubstep tunes didn't make top 40 :(

2013 for sure

Interesting topic! I have listened to the chart since 2007 and have a real soft spot for a lot of 90s and 00s chart music. But... a year that particularly sticks out for me is actually 2014! We had a dance revival at the time that I was over the moon about and the turnover at the top was so frequent.

Nothing was as exciting for me as the late 90s and early 00s. I'm gonna go with 1999

Ive said the 2000s particularly 2001 when I started to follow the charts and 2007 When downloads took off and we had a mix of on air on sale and sales started increasing again! Also my fav chart moment is between The Darkness vs Mad Workd and Joe McEldery vs RAGE IN 2003/2009 respectively!

Will always love the 09/10 dancepop era of the charts. Was what started me following the charts! 2011 gets an honourable mention for Adele and 21 destroying everyone's perception of how an album could sell in a modern climate.

1989

Why 1989 - I can't remember but we're the charts not slow then?

2000 was amazing... it was the fastest chart... 13-16 new entries in the top 40 each week...

Plus some of my favorite acts reached number 1 that year... Kylie Minogue, madonna, spice girls, all saints, geri halliwell, britney spears, gabrielle etc

2006, the year I started following so perhaps rose tinted glasses but the charts were so diverse and I loved most of the music, I also didn't have access to midweeks then so was always excited to see what was number 1.

2013/14 cus the house domination is something I really miss

I started following in 2014, but looking back at what ended up on the charts, I would say 2012. Those two years in particular were fruitful towards new artists/surprise crossovers and chart staple comebacks. Plus every single song felt like an endless party.

1976. The long hot summer with reservoirs dry, water shortages and non-stop heat. Did my O-Levels in June and started work in July. So much variety in the charts.

 

No downloading then. All vinyl and you had to sell a lot in a week to get to No.1.

 

1978 deserves a mention too. Boney M and Saturday Night Fever and Grease.

1996.

 

Britpop had made credible music commercially popular and its audience were expanding their taste to more interesting genres like electronic music, trip hop and left-field dance. Most weeks there was indie in the Top 10.

 

 

Even though I followed the UK chart since 2015, my favourite year in the UK chart has to be 2012.

It has a unpredictable feel to the chart in this year and it would be interesting to see who would get #1 in 2012.

(Fun fact: In Germany we had in the year 2012 "the era of Brazilian Dance Songs")

 

2009

Mine is 1979. The music was brilliant, the charts were excellent and I was buying about half a dozen records each week!

and I can still remember the first and last records I bought in 1979. The first was YMCA by The Village People and the last was Spacer by Sheila B Devotion!

I listen to belinda Carlisle at No.28 then next week went up 14 places to no.14 then top 10 and 16 years of top 40 listening took over my sunday and life. The days when songs climbed and made you want to tune in next week.
