I have tended to favour the discoveries in 50/50 type situations so my highest votes aren't necessarily my favourite tracks.

Basically did the same myself! I could easily have just had a whole top 3 or 4 of the songs I already knew but I pushed them all down a few places.

(also poor brave Iz, I'm not quite sure what about this song warrants such a negative reaction either although I'd have much preferred if the Evangelion song was here instead)

If this was the best of the 00's/90's for some of y'all I'm concerned. Iz I'm particularly concerned for you child as my ears are BLEEDING after that horror show.

Have to echo earlier comments RE: Sth Dan managing to find the nastiest remix possible of a stone cold classic. No one who proclaims to love dance music could possibly endorse that cold blooded murder of a remix. Trés tragique.

Rép d'Áskorza has voted.

I wouldn't claim that my entry was one of the best ones of the 90s. However, I would say that it is quintessentially 90s and deserves more attention than it got at the time.

Ditto. There were two songs in particular that I absolutely love (and I third that is another favourite) but I downgraded them in favour of other, less familiar songs. No prizes for guessing which two I mean.

Wow, I'm really surprised that many of you didn't like this contest, my top 5 discoveries here (not the top 5, but the top 5 I didn't know) are all better than my 12-pointer in the current Semi 2 shitshow. (Okay, the 5th one here is about the same level as the best one there - and from the same country).

Well that is because bjsc is crap these days Frank, full of insipid music that bores the pants off everyone with basic ass production

Do y'all care about finding more discoveries through the spin offs more than just having a fun contest to listen to that might contain songs you already know?
I just like fun contests. I vote for the best songs. Y'all can get more than enough discoveries in bjsc.

I do care about discoveries (and tend to penalise stuff I already know), but it was fun to listen to some songs I liked back then but haven't heard in ages.

I rarely participate in spinoffs where I think that there will be no discoveries at all - but I might miss out on some great stuff. I was quite hesitant to join the Japan/South Korea spinoff and there were some fantastic entries that I kept listening to for months.

I’ve voted for my favourite songs of the bunch, some of which I already knew (and adored) and some which I’d never heard before (and also adored). If the original post had mentioned anything about sending obscure songs most people have never heard like BJSC is for then I wouldn’t have sent such a well known song :P Even though Common People is something I probably haven’t heard in years prior to this

I’ve really liked this contest as it is a mix of new songs and ones I already knew, so listening through the list has been easier than the main contest of 90% new stuff.

My 00s entry also just came on the radio at work! Empire of relevancy

I certainly don't mind the odd song I know amongst them (my song was a small chart hit from a fairly well known artist) but I do much prefer the discovery aspect, Spin-offs are a bit more relaxed but they still should have the vein of the main contest and personally I enjoy the challenge that searching for a song of a certain theme brings and the completed unexpected gems that can be unveiled from that, with the more relaxed feel of no framework so there can be some familiar ones that maybe are only popular in a certain niche or not reached a wide audience. I'm not sure I'd enjoy a contest with loads of widely well known songs as people would go too obvious and the winner wouldn't really be in any doubt no?

I didn't have a problem this spin-off, Common People and Justified and Ancient I knew very, very well which was perhaps a bit over the line, but I wasn't massively aware of any others despite knowing a few artists and think they were all good picks for this.

I possibly misjudged just how well known Justified & Ancient would be! I knew that all of the older posters would know it very well indeed but I assumed the lack of presence of the KLF for about 20 years on anything like compilations/iTunes/Spotify would make it a discovery for our younger posters. If it wasn’t then I shall be very chuffed that the track has transcended the generations so well! :D

Nah I don't, it's not necessarily discoveries but when it's largely songs I *do* know AND don't really like, it's getting neither  Just a lot of it wasn't to my taste. I think spin-offs are fine to showcase what you really love that may be more known rather than it just being a mini BJSC.

I must say I do find some of the song decisions here baffling. You have an entire decade and you choose... that? A lot of disappointing songs, but some great ones too.

I suppose people could say that about my entry but it really is one of my faves of the 00s and the remix beats the original any day.

Discoveries are important for me but having some well-known songs in the mix doesn't matter too much! I don't usually penalise them, I understand why people do, but for me I just like ranking things in order of how much I like them, well-known or not.

Same for me in spin offs. I really don't care if I know them, but the odd discovery is always nice (and likely to be better due to it feeling newer etc..) but yeah, in a spin off like this one, I don't find them as essential.

Like, Liam though, with a theme as broad as this one, I'm surprised at just how samey and Dance heavy it was. It stood out to me more probs coz I'm not a HUGE dance fan, but I was def expecting a more varied contest for this.

That said, I did find songs I was happy enough to vote for and not a "ugh, I'll just put this here coz it's the best of a bad bunch or by default" or whatever.

I wasn't sure like proper classics would get through or I would have gone more obvious, for Dhoom Dhoom I had a song that happened to be from 2004 and I wasn't sure I wanted to send it to the main contest, and as a 00s contest cropped up I thought it was a good time to send something a bit different, both from my usual entries and what was likely to be sent by everyone else.

This is exactly what I do! I don't see the point personally of penalising stuff you do like, because it's SONG contest not discovery contest. I guess if there was a really hard contest to rank where I loved LOADS I might do that but I tend not to.
