Russia, Croatia, Denmark, Sweden, Switzerland, England and Colombia all have a great chance of reaching the final.

Spain got what they deserve, they are so poor and sacking their manager at the beginning of the tournament was an idiotic thing to do.

You'd really have to only fancy Spain in this game, as average as they've been this tournament so far but the cynic in me thinks the referees might have been paid a handsome sum by Putin himself to throw this in Russia's favour, much like with South Korea in 2002.

 

And I was proven exactly right about that. One of the most obvious penalties in the tournament waved away in ET, then the ref randomly interrupting absolutely nothing on Spain's last penalty to put him off. It's so corrupt :lol:

Bit gutted to be honest as Spain were my big bet. Ultimately they didn't produce much, but Russia were awful. I mean they are playing to their strengths but it's not nice to watch. It's left one side of the draw with a bunch of average teams. Spain were 100% the better side throughout the game but Russia were disciplined and didn't ball for any of the ball traps. Great chance for an underdog to reach the final but get spanked in it.

What I will say for them is they certainly knew how to play and defended well. Spain were so frustrating to watch and really haven't lived up to their expectations so I can't say I'm that sad at this.

I think Croatia will reach the final, they will beat Russia in the quarters and I think they would get past Colombia in the Semi Final as well.

That is definitely the case now! Spain were the only real big favourite (coming into the tournament) left in this entire half of the draw so whatever happens we're gonna see a surprise nation in the final.

I was thinking this, could it really be England's year, need to see if Brazil cock it up tomorrow, that would be quite a likely scenario, since all the big nations are dropping like flies.

 

We need to beat Columbia first, a France versus England final would be a big ask. But I still think Belgium, France or Croatia unless Denmark pull a surprise later tonight are likely to lift it. I think Russia will lose in the quarters, beating Spain was a fluke really, when Spain should have had a penalty in extra time.

Yes, and I'm happy with this result because Spain as a big, often uninspiring team are out, but much further with this sort of shady refereeing and it will not look deserved, it will be a farce. I would expect their run to come to an end against Croatia, assuming the Croatia group stage wonders show up tonight and next match.

We need to keep the 'England's year' things in check until AT LEAST we've beaten Colombia. We're nowhere near the stage where we should be reasonably getting excited yet.

 

(and in all honesty I see our glass ceiling being the semis even if the next two matches go well, regardless of Spain no longer being there)
