We're a country that's crowned Bob the Builder with two number one singles in the past - one of which was the biggest seller of the year it was released in. The British public has always loved a fairly silly record to dance to at birthdays/wedding discos etc. 'Baby Shark' is joining that tradition (in this case bringing it back as it's not really happened in recent year, PSY aside).

August 28, 20187 yr Surprised how high BTS have gone with this song, a considerable gain compared to previous releases I'm even more surprised by the fact that it seems their sales may near-double but their album is even lower than the last one.
August 28, 20187 yr If I’m absolutely honest, I see very little difference in the quality of Baby Shark and the quality of the large majority of no.1s from this year so far. But really, streaming has pretty much killed the novelty single. Unless it has a big name attached to it, there’s no way Baby Shark will get no.1 officially.

With the introduction of YouTube streams into the chart I can actually see novelty songs now being hits again and bypassing the Spotify hurdle. Harlem Shake and Gangnam Style could have been even bigger...

Let's be honest it was only Little Mix's single on the feature alone. When they do eventually release the first single off their new album in a few months' time it's bound to be a different story. It's done well enough as a stopgap single guesting on another artist's song with only half their profile between albums can do.
