It is 10 years since 'The One' came out

This peaking at #36 in the UK when it was released because of a cancellation of the physical release.

It's held up so well, it has a really timeless feel to it.

It'll forever bug me that the physical was cancelled about 3 days before it was due to be released. She relied on those at that point, it'd have probably got top 10/top 15 if it had just gone ahead. :(

Love 'The One'! For years I only gave time to the Freemasons Mix, but earlier this year I found my way back to appreciating the album version.

I'll never understand the rationale behind Parlophone cancelling the physicals either, such a shame. Were track lists ever revealed?

It doesn't appear that its sales in the week it reached #36 were revealed, but I'd estimate at around 4,000 copies (#34 sold 4,315). Not sure what was required for Top 20, but #21 sold 7,117. She'd surely have sold enough physicals to make it within the Top 20! Oh well. :(

I've been trying to get the Promo CD of The One for years, but whenever it pops up on eBay it tends to sell for £50+. Some luckier people get it in the £30-ish region, but I've never felt like I can justify it when it reaches that price range.

This should have been the lead single from X. Could have been big but sadly another missed opportunity.

Definitely agree that it shoulda been the lead from X.

The video is quite hypnotic.

*goes into trance*

Without a doubt in my Top 5 Kylie songs of all time - still listen to this all the time.

I’m certain this could have been huge and the reaction when she performs it live is amazing, if this had been the lead single it would have become a ‘signature’ song.

The decision not to release physicals easily cost it a Top 15-20 placing.

There are 2 UK promos - the CDR version with 2 mixes usually sells for about £30 now, I had several of the ones with the black cover - I kept 2 for my collection and 1 went on eBay and sold for £56 (That seems to be the going rate for it nowadays).

The cancellation of the physical is one of the most bizarre moves tbh - X had produced 3 Top 10 hits, the album had gone Top 5, Kylie was touring when ‘The One’ was released and they commissioned Freemasons remixes - everything was in place for this to be a hit.

It’s chart run still horrifies me 36-83-85 :drama:

It's pretty incredible how it even got to #36 really, I remember the download release stalled just outside the top 40 on iTunes.

I think it must have been downloads from her website or something?

Yes pretty sure it was sold as a digital download on the record companies website along with a live track (Those extra sales obviously helped it go Top 40 - the fact that it could have missed it without them! :drama: )

Great song, one of her best and yes I do agree with everyone that this should have been the lead single, it could have possibly given Kylie her 8th UK #1, and of course it would have had a better music video than it got and wouldn't have had that freemasons remix, which although sounds good, just doesn't compare to the album version.

I agree with the majority of you.

The One would have been a much better lead. 2 Hearts will forever be one of the most confusing comeback single choices to me. It didn't represent the album at all and is it what people even wanted from Kylie?

Call the Shots was out around the same time right? They would have sounded great on the radio together.

The One would have equally matched Call The Shots in terms of success if handled correctly.
