14th. What It Feels Like for a Girl = 6 votes



Welcome to Round 3 of Madonna's 'GHV2' survivor poll and finally after a very close and interesting round, the 2nd song bow out is 'What It Feels Like for a Girl', which edged out in front at the very last minute with 6 votes, and battling it out head to head with 'Bedtime Story' (which spent the best part of the week out in front), but ended up with just 1 vote behind with 5 and therefore safe for now.

The votes were far more spread out in the last round with 9/14 tracks receiving votes. 'Deeper and Deeper' was another song that came close with 4 votes, while 'Human Nature' got 3, title tracks 'Erotica' & 'Music' both received 2 votes each. Then finally 'Secret', 'Beautiful Stranger' & 'Ray of Light' each gained 1 vote each. The remaining 5 remained safe by not gaining any votes for the time being....

What It Feels Like for a Girl - was released in April 2001 as the 3rd and ultimately final single from her 8th studio album 'Music' and received acclaim from most music critics, who declared it as a highlight from the album, while also remarking it as one of the most mature musical ventures of Madonna's career. Commercially, the single reached the top-ten of the record charts in Australia, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Romania, Spain, Scotland and the United Kingdom. In the United States, it peaked at number 23 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number-one on the Dance Club Songs chart.

Madonna’s softcore feminist statement is largely lost amid the conventional sonics of Music's final single and doesn't really compare to the greatness of the first 2 singles and left the era feeling unfinished, I know there were more singles planned, but Madonna herself and the label couldn't come to an agreement, they wanted 'Amazing', she wanted 'Impressive Instant' and personally think the latter would have been very interesting. However this is 'GHV2' least dynamic offering when compared to what's on there.

Bedtime Story for me again. Not too fussed What It Feels Like for a Girl has gone although at the same time I don't think it gets quite as much appreciation as it deserves.

I agree, not too keen on the remix. Only thing is though, I can't see the video working with the original, yet the video is great.

 

Imagine it's video with 'Gang Bang' playing tho!!

Also surprised that 'Deeper and Deeper' is picking up so many votes so early, thought this would be more popular and personally rank it in my top 5 on this collection. Definitely find it much more enjoyable than 'Erotica'.

I am surprised by the votes for Deeper and Deeper as there are far worse songs on the list.
