11th. Erotica = 5 votes



Welcome to Round 6 and now that we're down to the final 10, I've decided to do something different, instead of the usual polls (and like I did for 'STR' poll). For this round you will have to rank the remaining 10 from the list below, from best to worst and the 1 or 2 (if there is a tie) songs that receive the lowest amount of points will be out by the next round. For example the song in first place in your ranking will get 10 points and whatever is at the bottom will have just 1 vote, and so on, so really think about your rankings guys, they will be listed below.

'Erotica' becomes the 5th song to be voted out and just missing out on a top 10 placing, and coming as to quite a surprise considering it hasn't received more than 3 votes in the previous rounds and didn't even come close to leaving. There were 13 votes cast in the last round (the lowest so far), and this gained 5 votes (the lowest amount so far). Only 5 songs received votes in the last round. 'Deeper and Deeper' & 'Beautiful Stranger', both gained 3 votes each. Finally both 'Secret' & 'Drowned World/Substitute For Love' gained 1 vote each.

'Erotica'was released in September 1992 as the lead single from her 5th studio album of the same name. The song was written by Madonna, Shep Pettibone and Anthony Shimkin, while production was handled by the singer and Pettibone. Musically, "Erotica" contains spoken word vocals, and is an ode to S&M, with Madonna using a pseudonym called "Dita". She invites her lover to be passive while making love to her and leads him to explore boundaries between pain and pleasure. Upon release the song received positive critical reviews, some considered it a high point of innovation in Madonna's career, while others found it scary. The song became a success worldwide, by reaching #3 in both the UK & U.S.A., as well as topping the charts in Italy & Greece, and top 10 places in several other countries.

I've never really been that keen on this song, but I do respect in what Madonna was trying to achieve with this, by taking a real risk and pushing some boundries with not just this single, but the sex book which also came out round about the same time, and would prove quite a challenge for Madonna's career at the time, lets just say the backlash was quite harsh and album sales and further singles did get affected, and many predicted that maybe her career would be over. Thankfully that didn't happen and Madonna would continue to flourish over the next few years. As for this track, a definite sequel to 'Justify My Love', as that also explored a very similar sound. 'Erotica' is very distantly cold and a creative high career wise. However I find this nt very enjoyable, not something you can really bop to and find the production way too muddled and kinda joyless. This is not something I go back to at all really.
