Talk on other forums about who could succeed Boris as ether PM or Tory leader in Opposition. I think Priti Patel has a good chance if she doesn't screw up at the Home Office, or Sajid Javid.

In the event a general election is lost then the membership will want a more moderate candidate. I think they will go for Rory Stewart, although just depends how long we're talking really.

Priti Patel as leader  You've said some funny things Chris, this is up there with the best.

Well how many people , two months ago, would have predicted she'd be HS today? I said if she didn't drop any clangers like she did before.

Priti Patel

Whether there is or isn't a Hard Brexit the next leader would need to be a unifier. A unifier of a hopelessly split party, a hopelessly split nation, and potentially a former-UK. Once the Far Right get shown up for what they are, Tories will have 2 choices: keep going in that direction oblivious to reality and die as a relevant political force, or move back to the centre and reason in order to deal with the fall-out which is going to last decades.

Unless we stay in the EU there are decades of trade deals to sort out and other countries aren't in the same desperate rush the UK would be, so we have to go cap in hand as we watch our national well-being go down the tube. As I tried to explain yet again to an aggressively abusive Brexit-loving friend (6 pints triggered it) on the train saturday night WTO trading doesn't mean business-as-normal. If it was so f***ing great everyone would be doing it. No-one is doing it exclusively. Response? Abuse. I walked off. Facts mean nothing to people with extreme opinions and they just go straight into denial and anger when you try and point out flaws in their ranting. The more obvious it gets that everything was a lie in 2016, the more they try and twist arguments to fit the new situation, having dropped each and every argument they used to spout off about deals and economic paradise. Now it's we know what we voted for and it was exactly a Hard Brexit.

That wasn't what they said at all 3 years ago. Poor dears have such short memories. Just like Johnson, Gove, Farage, Rees-Mogg and all the other cabinet liars who promised it would be a peace of piss to get a brilliant trade deal. Only economic prosperity in 2020 will prove that they are anything other than lying liars.

Rory Stewart seems smart and is positioning himself using reason, ready to deal with the issues. They would be hard-pressed to do any better than him.

I'm sure our new PM would not appoint a xenophobic homophobe to the top job of Home Secretary.

I’m sure a xenophobic homophobe would give another person of that ilk a top job.

Forgive my countless spelling errors in my previous post. They were in part due to me hurriedly/passionately responding to the suggestion that Priti Patel would make a good Prime Minister. Look at her voting record.

Chris, you are beyond help. These people are literally out to make life worse for people in situations like yours. You ask us to show empathy for you, and yes perhaps Kaths reponse was a bit insensitive but you hardly seem to be showing empathy yourself to all of the people who will be effected by the ghastly policies that this group of twats will in the very least attempt to inforce.

Rely on the NHS? Good luck with that.

I never said she'd make a good PM. I said if she doesn't mess up at the Home Office she has to be in a good chance of becoming next leader.

It’s unlikely we’ll need to worry about what happens if she doesn’t mess up tbh.

It's a complete populist appointment, I think about 5 years ago she was viewed as a future leader, one of the golden children of the Party. But she's shown herself up already in junior positions and I've no doubt she will do the same as Home Secretary. There is a reason Johnson's cabinet is laughably bad. I hate to be horrible but she fills a minority quota and looks good from a D&I perspective. Without a doubt the next Party leader will be someone who is more moderate as right now the Tories are basically going to lose their own majority driven by right-wing idelology.

Boris is at odds with his Justice Secretary whom he has today overruled.

Boris has today sunk the Justice Secretary’s proposal for anonymity in future sex cases ...

They’ve given the Stuart Hall case as a good example .. he was accused by one woman ... named by police then hoards of young abused girls and women came forwards .

Why are you excited by "get off my f***ing laptop" landed gentry pos Boris Johnson exactly? He is the worst of the worst. Respect? f*** that! WE KNOW WHAT HE'S LIKE. WE KNOW WHO HE IS.

This far right government is the worst in HISTORY and it needs to go NOW. All they do is lie and try to funnel wealth up to the top. He's in it for the money. He complains there isn't enough! He couldn't answer when asked when he had put COUNTRY before personal ambition even once. Absolute joke you get excited by this aristocratic plutocrat and yet repeat right wing LIES about Corbvyn, who actually would bring drastic quality of life changes across the board, helping to wipe out the vast wealth inequality. Give your head a shake!
