My justification for the 10s is simply through the sheer amount of stuff nowadays that makes me think, 'Wow, I can't imagine this existing 10 years ago' and I don't remember getting that feeling when I was younger. And it's not as if the sounds of decades past just disappear either.

I have no idea what is or isn't charting though, this is just based off the music I listen to.

For me the current decade of commercial music started to go downhill in 2015. Take dance for example, we went from such an exciting year for dance in 2014 to a lot more of a generic and watered down sound coming to the forefront :( It's pretty bleak when only 2 songs from my top 40 right now are in the actual top 40.
There's still a load of interesting dance tracks being released, most of them just don't make top 40 now and it's just something we have to get used to sadly.

I'll take any dance hit we can get but the Joel Corry and Sam Feldt tracks currently doing well aren't anywhere near my personal top 40, they're both just 'quite good'. At least we have great dance hits from Avicii, Sigala, Kygo, Meduza as well.

2004-6 was when is started taking more notice of the music channels (The Box I think it was) so I quite like those years, although many of my faves especially on the dance side of things.

2008 is quite good because of Basshunter unexpectedly making #1 for 5 weeks at the start, the brief revival of that sort of dance music and also the fact there was some good #1s. There was perhaps a bit of an overload of slushy R&B ballads that year but I find them quite nostalgic now.

Dance in 2004-6 was the looped house 80s covers era, which aside from a few tracks I wasn't hugely fond of. I did enjoy the brief Eurodance revival of 2006-8 though, Infernal, Cascada, Basshunter, Micky Modelle and a few others...it was especially great when dance albums started doing really well in 2008. Darren Styles had a big selling top five album somehow, Scooter and Basshunter both got No.1s etc...

The summer of 2006 and the second half of 2007 were my two favourite periods for music in the 00s. The former had too many great moments to list but it was quite something to see Hips Don't Lie, Smile, Maneater, Voodoo Child and Everytime We Touch all smashing at the same time <3 And then 2007 started out fairly pedestrian and even had a lull in the early summer for me but from about July to the end of the year I was constantly wowed - Song 4 Mutya, With Every Heartbeat, Rule The World, Bleeding Love, About You Now, Call The Shots, Big Girls Don't Cry, Delta Goodrem's Believe Again, it just seemed like quality pop was in vogue and dominating <3

I grew up in the 90s/00s but after watching totp on BBC 4 from the 1980s this has to be my favourite era. So much changed over a few short years regarding how music sounded. Nearly EVERY no1 is a classic nowadays engrained in the culture of society that everyone knows the words to.

See I'm a 90s kid at heart. Around spring 1996 (I was nearly 7 at the time) was when I started listening to the top 40 and paying attention to Top of the Pops, Smash Hits and things like that. Admittedly I'm more of a late 90s man - I was only a bubba for much of the first part of the decade - but there was so much great music around, and pop music in particular was brilliant. I can remember Spice Girls and Britney Spears launching, All Saints, B*Witched and S Club 7 when they all began too, I remember vividly things like the Elton John record for Princess Diana being huge, Cher spending seven weeks at number one with 'Believe'. 1999 in particular has always been my favourite year for music and writing about it every week this year for my blog has reminded me of why because literally anything went where music was concerned.

Let's check decade by decade:

1950’s: some amazing pop music was created, such as classics by Sinatra, Doris Day, Dean Martin, Elvis etc. However, in general the output has been improved since.

1960’s: brilliant decade - The Beatles, The Supremes, big soul and pop hits, folk like Joan Baez and Bob Dylan. Velvet Underground, Simon & Garfunkel... Lost of classic stuff. Love the baroque side of the decade. One of my fave decades!!!

1970’s: I'm a disco hater, the cheesy stuff was just awful. But fabulous classic albums in return such as Rumours by Fleetwood Mac and Off the Wall by Michael Jackson.

1980’s: The most versatile decade imo but pop hits were kind of formulaic. Learn to love lots of them but hate many of them too. I mean who wanted all that rock'n'roll revival with Shakin' Stevens & others... NO ONE! Don't really like 80s rock either apart from big ballads such as Alone and Total Eclipse of the Heart. Prince, Michael and Janet Jackson and Madonna though

1990’s: A bit of evolved and more classy version of the 80s. I adore the versatility and grunge and r&b but also some of the trendy stuff back then sound just AWFUL now (like Kula Shaker?!?)

2000’s: Ok what's not to like? Fantastic decade for r&b, pop, indie rock... at one point EVERYTHING was popular which is super rare. The birth of Lady Gaga

2010’s: I think we are going to look back at this decade with amaze ... It's been such a great journey for rap, electronic and pop music. Just brrilliant rock is lacking due to people finding the band format a bit innecessary for making music. I still think this is the best so far because the pure unpredictability: who would've guessed that retro songs like Uptown Funk and Get Lucky would be the biggest hits of their year or that a classic pop singer would be the biggest star in the world (Adele) or that a guy with just a guitar and looper would have the biggest tour of all time. Oh, and Shallow hitting #1 both sides of the Atlantic. Oh, and a black gay rapper having a #1 song with a country star from the 90s.

the 2000s for me, followed by the 1990s, then the 2010s

and not a fan of old music from the 60s and 70s... early 80s I don't like either although I love the 87-90 period

I have big favourites in all the last 3 decades (Tori Amos in the 1990s, Damien Rice in the 2000s, Ben Howard in the 2010s) so cannot complain

So close between the 90s and 00s but I’ll have to go with 2000s for the nostalgia factor! I was born in 2000 and really into music for as long as I can remember so they’re just extra special to me

5. 1970s

6. 1960s

7. 1950s

For me I feel like 2010s has to win it just on sheer volume. There is so much stuff out there that on a visceral level of tapping endorphins through scratching specific itches, it can't be matched. There's admittedly an unfair advantage as well, as there are now no shortage of musicians the same age as me, with similar backgrounds/experiences. It's much easy to connect to struggles that you're seen first hand, rather than stuff that's always been historical from my perspective. I love music of all eras, but about half of my music library is from this decade and no amount of historic backlogging (which I am in fact doing) will ever catch up to that.

For a decade as whole the 2000's would be my favourite. In terms of individual periods for me it's the early 2010's that is my favourite, it's the mid section of the current decade up until now that stops this decade from being my favourite as a whole.

Although I'm most familiar with the 00s and 10s, I think overall I like 90s music best. I like 80s music as well, so my ranking would be:

1. 90s

2. 00s

3. 10s

4. 80s

Any earlier than that is just 'old' to me, so I can't really rank the 50s-70s!

1. 2010's (Technology in music has evolved, more artists are talking about their struggles, so many artistic albums like A Moon Shaped Pool by Radiohead and Volcano by Temples)

2. 1990's (Lots of greats. Oasis, Blur, The Prodigy, Massive Attack, a lot of the warehouse anthems)

3. 1970's (Mainly for the classic albums like Dark Side Of The Moon, Rumours, Aladdin Sane and Fear Of Music)

4. 1980's (I like those synth sounds)

5. 1960's (The Beatles, Motown and psychedelic rock {The Doors, Love, 13th Floor Elevators} are the main highlights)

6. 1950's (There are a lot of classics that have inspired future artists)

2000s, the stuff I like was dominant, there was a sound I've been chasing ever since the decade ended (anything that sounds like 'nostalgic 00s' is awesome) and for me there's just a huge volume of great albums and musical points from this era.

2010s is probably close with the amount of more modern-sounding music - and even though I've been around in those two decades for being musically aware, I still feel like they have the greatest number of songs that I don't know that I would enjoy.

I opted for the 1980s for the sheer depth of great new music that was being released, whether it was in the top 40,or whether it was more obscure music being played on Radio 1 after 7pm. The 1970s were great for the amount of classic albums but there was a lot of cheesy music in the singles chart. The 1990s had some great dance music, particularly towards the end of the decade. The 60s were the years when pop and rock music was being developed into what it is now and were hugely influential, while the only good thing about the 50s is the birth of rock'n'roll. From the 2000s onwards, chart music has generally been a load of rubbish but the internet has enabled people of my age to find plenty of good new music that appeals to our own tastes.

1. 1980s

2. 1970s

3. 1990s

4. 2000s

5. 2010s

6. 1960s

7. 1950s

2000’s for me with the 90s close behind.

I was born in 95 so I grew up with music from those two decades and take great memories of quite a variety of stuff from those times.

After that I’d probably say

80’s

10’s

60’s

70’s

50’s (I cant think much of the 50s tbh)
