24. The Long And Winding Road (1970) / Let It Be

4/20 votes

In a very spread out round, 'The Long And Winding Road' was just about kicked out with 4 votes. The song featured on 'Let It Be', so it's the first from a studio album to depart. 'The Long And Winding Road' was the group's 20th and final #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, where it stayed atop for two weeks. The single followed the news that The Beatles were breaking up, so the feeling of sadness that the song conveys was relatable to fans at the time. 'The Long And Winding Road' was written by Paul and features his vocals too. But it almost wasn't a Beatles song. McCartney offered it to Tom Jones on the condition that it would be released as his next single. However, the label had other plans so this did not materialise. Paul was inspired by 'the calm beauty of Scotland' in terms of imagery, plus growing tensions surrounding the Beatles as the subject matter. During these tense times, Phil Spector was drafted in as producer for 'Let It Be' instead of the usual George Martin magic. McCartney has always disapproved of Spector's treatment of this song. Essentially, he felt there was too much going on. Martin was also on the same page, saying that the production was "uncharacteristic" of The Beatles. Still, it was a success, because... well... it's The Beatles. We say farewell to their last hurrah on this compilation.

(Today would've been John's 79th birthday, we celebrated by not knocking one of his songs out :kink:)

I've been exposed to 'The Long And Winding Road' for such a long time as both my dad and grandad regard it as one of their favourite Beatles songs. But it's never been a massive favourite for me so I'm not all that sad to see it go. It was my least favourite of the three songs in that 3-way tiebreak for a while so it's all good!

'Get Back' once again.

TLAWR is probably the next one I would have voted for after 'Get Back' (it's a nice song but not a patch on the wall-to-wall classics elsewhere on the list x) Will probably start targeting the earlier songs after that :magic: (but not those first 2, those along with 'She Loves You' are the best of them :'()

I love lush strings so adore tlawr reminds me of singapore and the last actual goodbye to the beatles. It was literally the end of an era.

From me to you is turning into a bit of chewing gum that you cant shake off your shoe...

Done!

The Long And Winding Road is my favourite Beatles song and I think of it as the template for ELO's best song,Eldorado,so it's a shame to see it go here. I'm still trying to vote out From Me To You.

'Something' having two votes already  it's stunning! Protect George at all costs :kink:

I thought this round would be 'Get Back's to lose after the heavy start but it looks like there's a two-horse race at the moment after all!

Do you like the Shirley Bassey version too?

I went for ‘Yellow Submarine’. Never been a fan of it

May be my next choice. It stops the Revolver album being absolutely perfect.

I've never heard her version before :o will get on it!

...also I totally agree with this, 'Yellow Submarine' feels so random on 'Revolver' and had its moment to shine on the soundtrack of the same name anyway. I wish they had swapped it for 'Rain', that merely being a b-side boggles the mind! Or even 'Paperback Writer' would've slotted in better.

You see I'm helping to expand your musical knowledge young Jade. She reached No.4 with it in 1969. I prefer The Beatles original though.

Thanks for doing this by the way. Wonder what will win. I have a couple of ideas which I shall keep to myself but may be wrong.

Did you listen to it Jade? I think it's great that you're a Beatles fan. The more younger fans the better.
