Shotgun was actually at #2 behind Drake when it was removed from the playlist (10/08/2018)

Yes, it was... and as I mentioned in the post, it went back to number one after it was removed!

Two weeks before, in fact! Technically it's exactly the same case with George Ezra's Shotgun, since that went back to number one for two weeks in August when they had dropped it from their playlist.

But yes, it's weirder for them to do it with Dance Monkey as that hasn't even fallen from number one at all yet.

Yes that's what I was getting at... so it seems a bit early for them to drop Dance Monkey while it's still #1.

Then again, if songs are taking longer to peak, I guess R1 can only support them for so long - iirc they dropped 3 Nights before it had got as far as the Top 10!

Caroline Polacheck? More like Caroline Payolacheck

How dare you come for Queen Caroline!! She’s been in the industry for too long to be treat like this!

From what I can tell, the only other songs R1 removed from the playlist while they were #1 and staying there in the same week's chart were Despacito and Shape Of You.

Despacito was about to spend a 9th week at #1 on its 2nd spell and R1 probably knew it was going to ACR so would be replaced the next week, which it was (although it later returned for 2 weeks).

Shape Of You was about to spend a 13th week at #1 and Sign Of The Times was released that day, so R1 probably thought / hoped that would replace it, which it did (although SOY later returned for a week).

So what does that mean for Dance Monkey - maybe R1 are hoping Billie is going to replace it next week?

For me it feels like R1 gave Dance Monkey a token playlisting because of its popularity and when they do that they’ll have a song on for as little as possible to show they’ve supported it and then dump it at the first opportunity. Despite its success, I don’t think the song really suits the playlist as a whole as it borders on the verge on being too cheesy (I said it) :kink:
Is Georgia's song doing anything? Surprised to see it A-listed.
nope, but she's not on any spotify playlists :/
Bizarre that Dance Monkey never made the A List. It’s new music from a fresh young artist, it should be up their street!

Apparently it always got a divisive reaction from its listeners and that's the reason it was never A-listed.

what about all the songs that are insta-A-listed before anyone has ever heard it :D

not sure about that

Singles by Ed, Ariana, Taylor, Bieber, Little mix can all be very divisive too

Did anyone like Taylor-Me?

I don't think 'Me' or anything by those artists is particularly divisive, people who didn't like the songs wouldn't be offended by them, but 'Dance Monkey' seems to be Marmite, you love it or you hate it. I obviously love it personally but I can see why it might grate on people.

They did A List People by the 1975 though and everyone seemed to hate that

Well it's a very different sound to what Radio 1 usually play (they're not going to be A listing Idles anytime soon) - and it wasn't there as long as their usual releases.

It's a mute point though. The acts that are immediately A-Listed are A-Listed because of their profile/status. They're The 1975 and they have a big Radio 1 leaning fanbase. Tones & I doesn't, so she was never going to debut A-List regardless and they had time to gauge how their listeners responded to it in order to figure out where to categorise it.

in there 1975 example, it's a total case of payola

no matter how terrible or bad their output is, they're playlisted anyway

Which is exactly the same for loads of artists

The 1975 headlined Radio 1's Big Weekend this year, of course they're going to support them.
