11. I Want To Hold Your Hand (1963) / non-album single

6/15 votes in tie-break round

Round 17 of this series of polls resulted in a 3-way tiebreak. This was an important one as the loser would be missing out on a place in the top 10. The songs in question were 'I Want To Hold Your Hand' vs. 'Day Tripper' vs. 'All You Need Is Love'. Ultimately it was 'I Want To Hold Your Hand' that was deprived of a place in the top 10, after receiving 6 of the 15 votes in the tiebreaker. It was the earliest song left in the poll - everything left is now from 1965 onwards. 'I Want To Hold Your Hand' was written by Lennon and McCartney at Jane Asher's house; she was Paul's girlfriend at the time. There is no lead singer on this song, as John and Paul sing in unison throughout. The pair wrote this love song after manager Brian Epstein challenged them to create something that would appeal to the American market. They smashed this task out of the park as 'I Want To Hold Your Hand' became the group's first ever U.S. #1 and paved the way for the British invasion! Back in the U.K. the hype for this single, following 'She Loves You', was phenomenal. The demand was so high that over one million advanced orders had been placed for it. It dislodged 'She Loves You' from the top spot and stayed there for five weeks. It was the first time that an act had ever taken over from themselves at #1 in British history. The Beatles soon also set a record for occupying both the top 2 in the U.K. singles and album charts simultaneously. Beatlemania was off the scale. 'I Want To Hold Your Hand' was such a success that it holds the title of being the best-selling Beatles single worldwide. But it unfortunately fails to replicate such overwhelming success in this survivor, as it crashes out before we reach the top 10.

'I Want To Hold Your Hand' is cute but I'm glad 'Day Tripper' survived over it. Voted for 'Let It Be' again!

Will be more prompt with these polls now as life has calmed down again.

Very glad that 'I Want To Hold Your Hand' went out from that tiebreak, the other two are very necessary presences in the top 10 as much as I do like 'I Want To Hold Your Hand' (that'd be the next one I'd have targeted after 'Help!' which I am of course continuing to vote for x).
poor ol John Lennon! Everyone targeting his remaining songs. Not me, someone's got to dare to be the one to say it - Yesterday isn't as good as the other 9 remaining. Cue thunderbolts & lightning, very very frightening... :o
