I do agree that Christmas is a 'framing device' as you put it, but as a result, as well as the sound and marketing of the song, that makes it indeed a Christmas song. It may not be specifically about Christmas in the way other Christmas songs are but it still is one. That's thanks to some post-production jingles over the top of it. The gift motive would have worked at amy time of the year, seeing as it was about love. It was retroactively changed to mean a gift as in a Christmas gift. If you removed the bells and changed it to summer, or Easter, or birthday, you would no longer have a Christmas song.

I get that, but the fact is that it was changed to Christmas. Doesn't matter what the original idea was, it was changed. It happened. That makes it a Christmas song! :P
