June 9, 20205 yr Author Decade: Top 200 Songs 2 Ulrik Munther - Heroes in Defeat (Change Your Mind) | 2013 | EOY Peak: 1 It's a shame this couldn't quite make it all the way to #1, but nevertheless, being my second favourite song over a 10 year period is not remotely shabby...! Ulrik Munther's self-titled debut album came out in 2011, and Heroes In Defeat was one of the original 11 songs on the album. I didn't discover it until very early 2013 though, when our own RobBob recommended his track Soldiers to me. I found the album and very quickly became obsessed. Heroes In Defeat wasn't my initial favourite, but it quickly took that crown with repeated listens. I knew it had struck a major chord with me. The track debuted at #1 in my chart and held the top spot for 4 weeks. It spent 24 weeks in my top 10 across three stints, and was a comfortable EOY #1 for 2013 - an unusual situation where the song actually wasn't from that year, but it simply couldn't be ignored. It's also unusual because it wasn't ever released as a single! The next highest non-single in this countdown is Greyson Chance's Summertrain at #36. I also sent this track to BJSC, where it did terribly but hey, no accounting for taste! :kink: Heroes In Defeat remains an extremely special track to me. It documented a huge part of my life, where I finally came to terms with my sexuality. The track talks about growing up and losing sight of your heroes, and encourages you to follow your dreams just like those heroes did. "Don't just be a part of the system" is a simple yet so effective lyric, and truly sums up the essence of the track. June 9, 20205 yr Author Decade: Top 200 Songs 1 Girls Aloud - Something New | 2012 | EOY Peak: 1 I suppose it's not really surprising that, of two singles they released in this decade, my favourite artist of all time ends up at #1. However, when you consider that one of those two singles was their worst single release, it makes it even more impressive that Something New is actually the song I consider to be Girls Aloud's best. No shade to Beautiful Cause You Love Me really - behind the jokes, I think it's a great song, but On the Metro deserved x It had been a LONG three years waiting for Girls Aloud to return, so when Something New leaked online, I was ALL over it. I wasn't sure if it was going to actually be their comeback single or not, but I adored it instantly and put it on repeat. It had premiered by the end of the week and I could feel a bit less guilty about spamming it! :lol: It spent an initial two weeks at #1 in my chart, before returning for another FIVE, then returning for one more again. This means Something New still holds the record for most weeks at #1 in my chart with its total of 8 - nothing's come close since! It also spent 28 consecutive weeks in the top 10 - it's probably safe to say that's also a record. I re-did my 2012 EOY because I disagreed with it (:lol:) and I even redid my redone chart.... :lol: but Something New is what I officially consider my EOY #1 for 2012, after battling Alone Again. It's a song that still gives me such euphoria now. It's fun, it's loud, it's brashy, it's EVERYTHING a Girls Aloud comeback needed to be, and things felt so much simpler when Something New was first around. I revisit it frequently, and it's on its way to becoming my most played song on last.fm - rightfully so :heart: It's only appropriate that Girls Aloud are the leaders of the pack. Fancy, Alone Again and especially Anywhere are my faves in the top 20, all made my decade-end top 1000 (and I also charted the solo version of Alone)
