Yeh this time last year SYL was hovering around 100-200 on Spotify and took off by the end of January.

A late reply, but thanks to all who compiled the sales data and put this together! I missed the majority of it but listened to the rest in order using the YT links. Overall it was more representative of the year than I thought it'd be (tbf my expectations were low ), plus it was nice listening through without Radio 1 commentary between each song! :P

Dance Monkey now up to #8 in the official year-end list :D

although sadly Meduza are booted from the top 10

Don't like the song but glad Tones is represented in the top 10 now as it was such a defining song for the year.

Ugh I could have done without that!

But as said, it would be a bit silly if a song that successful wasn’t represented in the top 10.

Will they be posting a top 100? And for the albums?

Well done Rod bagging a place in the top 10, thought Robbie or Coldplay would be the artists to do that in November.

wow at Mariah and Wham making the top 100 this year, I don't believe they have for a good while despite them obviously selling well every Christmas.

that's rather unfortunate for Freya to have Castles kicked out in the last week of the year by old songs however.

Did not realise 'Old Town Road' would be that far ahead of 'I Don't Care'!
'I Don't Care' by Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber, has one of the strangest chart runs of all time. On the chart dated 19/07/19 the track fell from number 2 to nowhere only to re-enter the chart the following week at number 3. The reason is that on the 19/07/19 it was the fourth biggest selling track by Ed Sheeran and was therefore removed from the charts under the "three songs by an act" chart rule. The track was on ACR and therefore its streams were being reduced. Had the track still been on SCR it would have been at number 1.

I'm fairly sure its sales from the week it was excluded from the chart are still included towards its total though. (And the totals still ignore ACR as well right?)

Suppose it mostly comes down to Lil Nas X's song being out all year, and it having a deceptively long chart run near the top despite having only 2 weeks at #1 - I knew it was ahead of course but just didn't anticipate the gap being that big.

Yes, sales from weeks when tracks are excluded are still counted and ACR is ignored too.

Sales for the top 4 best selling albums, as given by Alan Jones

1 - 640,892 - Lewis Capaldi - Divinely Uninspired To A Hellish Extent

2 - 568,110 - Ed Sheeran - No 6 Collaborations Project

3 - 523,844 - Motion Picture Cast Recording - Greatest Showman

4 - 369,609 - Billie Eilish - When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?

Absolutely horrendous sales by any standards. Compare them with the best selling albums from 10 years ago

1 I Dreamed a Dream - Susan Boyle * 1,632,732

2 The Fame - Lady Gaga * 1,388,964

3 Crazy Love - Michael Bublé * 1,197,421

4 The End - Black Eyed Peas * 1,090,211

5 Only by the Night - Kings of Leon * 1,079,000

6 JLS - JLS * 969,762

7 I am Sasha Fierce - Beyoncé 822,000

8 Sunny Side Up - Paolo Nutini * 810,459

9 It's not Me, It's You - Lily Allen 779,000

10 Reality Killed the Video Star - Robbie Williams * 752,846

Surprised by the amount of songs in that top 100 singles which were released before 2019, especially the catalogue tracks beyond the last couple years. I hope this isn’t a trend that builds each year as streaming makes the sales charts less focused on current popularity and more general popularity. Mr Brightside being a big example (I would say queen too but as they had a successful film tie in then they’re not completely out of place).

I do think on a whole, 2019 has been a very weak year for releases (probably the weakest this decade) IMO, so I hope this is more a reflection of that. Will be interesting to see which 2019 tracks are on next year’s list. Will also be interesting to see if the Christmas songs keep growing in annual sales and we see more classics making the end of year chart.
