Looks very likely that we are getting a blue Senate and therefore a blue sweep - some networks have already called it for Ossoff and he was doing slightly worse than Warnock, and again it looks like the late-counted ballots massively favour Democrats so seems to be sitting fairly safe.

Excellent news assuming it holds, Loeffler and Perdue both seemed like incredibly corrupt politicians (so your average Republican, though the former was by some distance the wealthiest Senator), who shouldn't be holding office, and getting control will actually allow the Biden adminstration to do things.

Ossoff will be the youngest Senator at age 33 so some (relatively) young representation too.

My final thought for tonight is that if both Democrats win — and it looks like they will — the 2020 elections will go down as having been a lot better for Democrats than a lot people thought at 10 p.m. on Nov. 3. I wouldn’t call it a blue 🌊 or anything like that — Democrats won a bunch of races and states by the barest of margins, and they lost seats in the House. But given that (i) partisan polarization is king, and (ii) many of our political systems skew the public will toward Republicans (House district lines, the Senate, the Electoral College, etc.), maybe this is what counts as a decisive result? In any case, we need to start differentiating a lot more clearly between electoral outcomes and public opinion and political will, if that makes any sense. (Maybe it doesn’t … I’m tired.)

Much, much easier to say: The Biden presidency now looks very different. The political transformation of the suburbs is real. Warnock made history. And I don’t think Trump is good for the GOP’s electoral prospects?

You love to see it.

It's just so satisfying watching Trump lose over and over again~ it never gets old. :D

The margins are probably small enough that Trump's whining and bitching over the last two months and phone calls to governors cost the Republicans the Senate and it's incredibly funny.

Imagining McConnell seethe *.*

Ooh that's fantastic news re: the Senate race, Trump completely destroying their chances with that absurd hour long phone call as well, don't you love to see it? :cheeseblock:

This could actually be a really massive opportunity for real change, there's still a shitload to clean up, but this is the most power the Dems have had in a long time.

It's not the phone call specifically that cost the Republican candidates victory, it was the fact that maybe some Trump supporters didn't turn out due to thinking there was widespread election fraud.

Or just maybe (although this is less certain) that Georgia has shifted into being a blue state and Republicans just don't quite have the numbers any more to win it in any election there if there is a high Democrat voter turnout?

Any number of things, but the important thing is that it's enough to get two Senators over the line - that Warnock is only the second ever African-American senator from a southern state (and the first Democrat) is a clear example of how bad the racial voter suppression has been in that area of the States for years and how important Stacey Abrams and her team driving voter registration was for this cycle.

Anyway, the advantage of this is that the Democrats pass legislation and if they don't fix the issues (pandemic stimulus, racially charged atmosphere, long-term healthcare), can't hide behind an obstructive Senate as the reason. Very good direction for the States to be heading in.

It’ll still not be an easy setup though, Joe Manchin is up for re-election in 2022 and I can’t see a WV electorate taking too kindly to anything too overtly “”socialist””

Whatever the yank version of a knighthood is, Stacey Abrams deserves sixty of them. What an absolute fucking legend she is.

I’m not counting my eggs just yet but this is looking like really very good result. Not just for Georgia, the Democrats and the US but to be quite frank the entire world.

Trump speaking at a rally in DC now on Sky News: "Our victory was stolen and last night was stolen too"

Also the Secret Service need to know soon whether he and/or Pence will be at the inauguration in order to plan. They can't say no and then just turn up at the last minute. It's thought Pence may attend even if Trump doesn't as it looks better if he stands in 2024.

Sturgeon may refuse entry to Trump.

From The Telegraph.

Mr Trump is reportedly considering travelling to his Turnberry golf resort in Scotland to avoid Mr Biden being sworn into office. But Scotland's First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon has said Donald Trump would not be allowed to visit Scotland to play golf during Joe Biden's inauguration.

The First Minister stressed it is illegal to travel in or out of the country without a valid reason and said: "Coming to play golf is not what I would consider to be an essential purpose."

The White House has repeatedly refused to say what the outgoing president will do when Mr Biden is inaugurated on Jan 20, prompting speculation about whether Mr Trump will attend the ceremony.

However, Prestwick Airport has been told to expect the arrival of a US military Boeing 757 aircraft previously used by Mr Trump on Jan 19, according to the Sunday Post.

Frankly we were never going to see President Biden pushing for anything that even whiffs of 'socialist' no matter what. These Senate wins are just the difference between Biden being able to do anything or not. I expect if the Republicans had held the Senate they'd try to block Biden from appointing cabinet members and certainly from appointing judges (as they already did for years under Obama). Also would be goodbye to any chance of sensible COVID legislation.

Someone needs to be prodding Stephen Breyer to resign from the Supreme Court ASAP. The Court is in a bad enough state as it is without it being set up for the same to happen to him as happened to RBG.

He needs to wind his neck in.

Is he gonna demand 3 recounts here as as well?

He'll demand to speak to Boris instead. :o

Capitol building in lockdown as police clash with protestors outside. They're trying to get inside the building as more DC police and National Guard now arrive for support. Residents nearby told to stay indoors out of sight.

Live scenes on Sky News now. Lots of protestors there, encouraged today by Trump.

Edited by common sense

I think Pence might be fired by Trump after it is finished.
