What happened with Sunshine’s peak in 2001? Three simultaneous #1 singles but only a #3 album?
  • Author
It was released in late November - of course, the busiest time for big name new albums! It was caught behind week 2 of Robbie Williams' Swing When You're Winning at #1, and Blue's All Rise album new at #2. Perhaps someone else (Jay? :kink:) could share some sales info - I expect it was competitive!

Insane figure!! :o obviously a pretty unthinkable figure for the album chart these days for #1, let alone #3.

Have You Ever may not be their most remembered, but it’s a gorgeous song!

I didn’t know that Sunshine sold 136k in its first week, that’s astounding! It’s a pity that Blue beat them to #2, and I’m kind of surprised they pulled that off considering that their hits from it weren’t as big as S Club 7’s, as well as the fact that S Club 7 were the more established artist. Just 2 years after the success of Sunshine, it was quite a shock to see Seeing Double scrape the Top 20, and even S Club Juniors’ debut album outperformed it during Q4... that was such a fall from grace!

First Week Sales (Albums):

51,000 S Club (#2, 1999)

73,000 7 (#1, 2000)

136,000 Sunshine (#3, 2001)

44,000 Seeing Double (#17, 2002)

73,000 Best: The Greatest Hits of S Club 7 (#2, 2003)

First Week Sales (Singles):

190,000 Bring It All Back (#1, 1999)

84,000 S Club Party (#2, 1999)

92,000 Two in a Million / You're My Number One (#5, 1999)*

123,500 Reach (#2, 2000)

39,500 Natural (#3, 2000)

144,000 Never Had a Dream Come True (#1, 2000)

179,000 Don't Stop Movin' (#1, 2001)

143,000 Have You Ever (#1, 2001)

46,500 You (#2, 2002)

26,500 Alive (#5, 2002)

54,000 Say Goodbye / Love Ain't Gonna Wait For You (#2, 2003)

*Peaked at #2 with 30,000.

92k for a #5 with Two in a Million :o That was a very competitive Christmas. Glad it managed #2 a couple of weeks later.

44k for #17 for Seeing Double... that seems ridiculously high compared to what we're used to nowadays :')

I didn't realise that Have You Ever started off with roughly the same first week sales as Never Had a Dream Come True. I also forgot that Have You Ever spent longer in the Top 10 than it.

Thanks for sharing that info, Liam!

Some incredible first day sales *.*

wish were still in the days where we'd get some huge figures! Also some good few songs to check out - maybe I just don't know them by name yet!

S Club were one of the biggest pop acts of the noughties, for sure! What was their US success like? A couple of their songs charted over there, right?

Only Never Had a Dream Come True! Got to #10 *.*

They deserved more US success tbh. Funnily enough their only US hit happens to be their only main single that didn't chart in Australia
