Lil Wayne is the original! I wonder how many will change their name in a few years time

I also find it confusing we have Lil Baby and DaBaby, why do you want to be baby so much???

Lil Louis. Had a number 2 hit with 'French Kiss' in 1989. It was featured on the Top Of The Pops edition from 1989 that was shown last night on BBC4.
Given that rap artists usually have big egos or pretend so in their music, it's a but suprising that there are more artists using Lil' in their monikers than Big.

I remember Lil Louis was probably the first artist using Lil, now it seems to have developed to a higher level of artists using that term.

The only 'Lil' artist I know of who ended up removing it from their name was (Lil) Bow Wow  It's hard to imagine many of their names not sounding weird without the Lil

'Baby' is a very overused word in rap names too, those are the two biggest of course but there are a ton more moderately popular Baby X / X Baby rappers around at the moment.

It’s sad I know but if see an artist that starts with ‘Lil’ I always know their music is not for me.

I believe Lil Toenail is supposed to be a thing.

That's the one I thought of too! One other is Lil Boosie (who charted in the US a few times in 2006-2008, including as a feature on Webbie's top 10 hit 'Independent'), who later changed his name to Boosie Badazz, but that's pretty low profile (although apparently he had a #3 album in the US in 2015 post-name change).

There's also Young Jeezy becoming Jeezy, in similar words.

Lil' Durk a new one on me, just imagine an artist called Durk without Lil'

Oh yes I did know about Boosie Badazz as well! (Though I don't think I have ever heard a song by him so he's not an artist I think about much).

I think a lot of the Lil artists are so named because they're short which isn't something that necessarily goes away with age. Young X rappers on the other hand it does seem to make less sense to keep the name in the long run (although again I can't immediately think of any examples of such artists changing their name other than Jeezy, I suppose hip-hop as a genre is still relatively young as a whole).

Who was the first Lil to get to number 1... Lily Allen?

The first one as a lead artist (if it counts! Otherwise it would be Lil Dicky), although Lil Kim and Lil Jon had number ones before that as featured artists!

And Lil Wayne before Dicky.
