I think some ballads come in different forms. Fragile has atmospheric/somewhat trancey style of production, but the nature of the lyrics/her vocals/the melody... it has a gentle, understated vibe to it. It's so pretty. I would say it's a ballad moulded into a form where it fits on a dance/pop album where every other song is much more uptempo.

 

Obviously people can disagree but that's my take on it.

Madonna & Katy just missed out. Girls Aloud & Spice Girls were behind them, I like them songs, they've just never been favourites of mine by those bands. Kylie's was ok... I just ended up feeling a bit :nocheer: as the chorus kicked in. It was building to what sounded like a stunning 'One & One' by Robert Miles type subtly Euphoric chorus, but just fell flat and ruined the momentum for me :( The production is lush though, and it WAS growing on me slightly each time)

 

Before this I'd not heard Madonna, Kylie or Robbie. All were nice enough discoveries at least but Madonna's was really worming it's way into my affections, but Rihanna blocked her as I forgot just how much I loved that! Zara was a massive rediscovery though! I've only ever heard her album like, 3 times or something.

 

A nice round though. I'm a sucker for a good ballad though :wub:

 

My top 5 ended up being locked in pretty much from the start. All brilliant:

 

Little Mix (First time they've been top of my rank! I get shivers EVERY time!)

Taylor Swift (Always has been a highlight, so I'm very happy to see people discover it!)

Ariana Grande (Absolutely STUNNING. I'm so happy this managed to get it's chance to shine and I'm really praying it pays off for the forum :heart:)

Lady Gaga (Has been a top 3/5 highlight off ASIB since the start! Absolutely stunning.)

Britney Spears (Very different to your typical conventional ballad and Britney had plenty of those to choose from, but we decided for more of a risk in the hopes it'd stand out a bit more!)

The Katy Perry song was a beautiful discovery utterly loved it :wub: The Taylor Swift one though was sublime, what a song it was easily my favourite of the round.

 

Really tough round actually I loved the Britney, Madonna, Girls Aloud and Pink songs too. Also really liked the Kylie and Robbie ones. The only one I wasn't keen on was Garden I found it a bit boring.

Ballads don't have to be gut-wrenching, piano-based songs, they can come in all shapes and sizes. There's clearly different interpretations but, as Jay says, the mood of a song and they way it's sung is a factor. Take a way the dance beat and I don't think people would be questioning it.

It’s definitely not a bad song, it’s only last in my ranking basically because all of my non-votes are roughly on par so they’re in pretty much random order :lol:

 

My definition of a ballad is definitely that though: piano or maybe a kind of acoustic song with strong vocals. “Halo” (rip) is a great example of a ballad imo

It was also to prevent the same songs being sent as last time and getting similar results etc.. throws things wide open a bit more and people get to discover new tracks etc..

 

I can't say too much but we are already thinking of little things to change up from this time etc..

I actually didn't like ghostin' at all on my first listen, but I always give the songs a few listens before voting and wow it grew on me massively I ended up loving it :wub:
