I think that sometimes, not for everyone certainly but for some people getting into music made before they were born etc is harder because we subconsciously associate that music as twee or old fashioned even if we don't THINK it is. I'm trying to think...I was too young to experience a lot of my faves albums so I've had to go back and listen to those, but in terms of albums I love before I existed I'm thinking Christina's Stripped (well before I was born in that case :magic:). I was born the week Beautiful was released *.* Apart from that mostly just the old classics most people know

My comment was referring to Defaze "not seeing the appeal" in the Spice Girls music when they like Little Mix so much, nobody has said that they have to stan them or that it's frowned upon not to.

It is a really bizarre and ironic thing to say when the Spice Girls paved the way for Little Mix's sound and image, and are idolized by them. If you're going to make a bold statement on a forum full of people, you should be ready for the response and not cry "opinion police"

re. the part in bold, the implication was there (not from you) with finding it difficult to accept the possibility that there are people who either don't have a strong opinion of, don't particularly rate, or dislike a song.

Speaking generally here, not about anyone specific, the generation thing absolutely comes into play! I was born the week Mama / Who Do You Think You Are was #1  so naturally I was too young to experience the Spice Girls when they were around initially. It was only really 6 or 7 years ago that I really started getting into them, and it's escalated as the years have gone by. I wasn't even planning to go to the reunion tour until Jay had a spare ticket :kink: but it was one of my absolute favourite concert experiences ever, so a lot's happened to help me appreciate the Spice Girls despite the delayed start...!

That's absolutely all fair enough - a lot's happened to help you appreciate a girl group from before your time. On the flip side, people can also still explore all that they had to offer and come to a different conclusion.

How is saying 'I don't see the appeal' even remotely a bold statement? It wasn't even intended to be provocative -- I was literally an innocuous comment justifying why I'd ranked it last in a list of otherwise stellar entries. I don't even '''disdain''' Viva Forever; I just... don't care for it.

There seems to be a very specific subset of this forum that won't hear a bad word said about their favourite act, and it coincides very closely with stans of now-defunct girl groups (exhibit A: rabid GA loon drive-bying Zara in last round's reflection thread). It really really ain't that serious.

Ah I see you like basic... fair enough you never had a chance you poor poor thing

Gross.

Ariana Grande - breathin'

Britney Spears - Everytime

Little Mix - Reggaetón Lento (w/ CNCO)

Madonna - La Isla Bonita

P!nk - f***in Perfect

Spice Girls - Viva Forever

Taylor Swift - Delicate

Britney was the winner for me  My favourite artist with my favourite song by her and one of my all time (like, top 2) favourite songs. Spice Girls were second, stunning song. One of the ultimate girl band ballads for me! P!nk & Taylor were great entries for this round, it's really made me fall in love with the former again so much!

I was struggling between Madonna and Katy to get my final place! I couldn't choose and ranked them one above the other each listen through :drama: So I just went with the latest ranking!

Lady Gaga and Kylie's songs were never my faves by either of them, but listening to them both today and I liked them a lot more than I remembered doing. Redrab has always been mid-low tier RiRi singles for me :( My personal favourite for this round wasn't an option in the poll ('What Now'!) Zara's has vocal mixing issues (as it got pointed out earlier in the thread) and Dua's song was good for about the first 10 plays, but then airplay happened and over exposure has completely killed it off for me (not as in I dislike the song - just that I don't care to hear it ever again right now)

You appear to be taking this seriously though when all people did was question your reasons (or lack thereof)

(like most of Spice Girls' discography) I just don't see the appeal of Viva Forever at all.

This without any context but italics for emphasis is a bold statement from a Little Mix fan. If it wasn't, then there wouldn't be so many posters asking why?

[spice Girls] should be universally adored by absolutely everybody?

Yes.

You really think you're doing something with the incessant mention of 'Little Mix fan', don't you?

Why would I need to provide context? It's literally there in the quote. I don't see the appeal because it does nothing for me; it just doesn't stir up any strong emotions one way or the other. I can definitely see where the hysteria has arisen from though -- I'll be more vigilant with my formatting in future. ^_^ ^_^

If it’s not that serious, why are you being so serious?

Opinions are being shared, that’s all! I don’t think I strayed into personal territory by expressing the fact that it surprises me that Viva Forever could be so disliked. Then I gave my point of view about why I think it’s great. I’ve not said you’re wrong or that you’re not entitled to feel what you feel! Doesn’t mean I’m not allowed to find it surprising.

Also you’ve been highly defensive over Little Mix in the past, so I don’t think you can really criticise fans of other girl groups for the same behaviour.

^ A gorgeous set of songs!

Unfortunately Rihanna broke her streak of votes from me.

I actually at least like every song sent, it was an enjoyable playlist. Here’s how I ranked the other songs, following on from Taylor:

Little Mix - Reggaeton Lento

Dua Lipa - IDGAF

Katy Perry - Wide Awake

P!nk - f***in Perfect

Rihanna - Rehab

Zara Larsson - Don’t Let Me Be Yours (Oops sorry Lee, but like I said, I liked every song! Just liked this one the least :basil: )

We'll call it "Parade and Co Artist Forum"

They stayed at my dads house and performed at my bestfriend's front door on T4 Sundays, so it HAS to be Parade.

Also can I add 2 cents to the fire and say I'm not a massive fan of 'Viva Forever' but 'Higher' by The Saturdays is one of the best pop songs of all time.

Yeah, the first part is verging on gaslighting now. This whole thing stemmed from me sharing my opinion (that's all!!), which apparently I had to justify because 'omg coming from a Little Mix stan'. How is that not personal territory? Literally playground mentality (par for course for BJ though).

The last point is just flat-out untrue. I barely engage anyone on here because of incidents like this. I've took exception to one particular user calling them instagram tarts and puppets which, y'know, any reasonable human being should object to.

1st P!nk - f***in Perfect

2nd Taylor Swift - Delicate

3rd Ariana Grande - breathin'

4th Dua Lipa - IDGAF

5th Lady Gaga - Alejandro

6th Madonna - La Isla Bonita

7th Spice Girls - Viva Forever

8th Katy Perry - Wide Awake

9th Kylie Minogue - The One

10th Britney Spears - Everytime

13th Zara Larsson - Don’t Let Me Be Yours

I don’t hate DLMBY or anything this was actually a very strong round, Zara & Little Mix just fell to the bottom of the pack. Iirc this is my first (or one of my first) votes for Spice Girls

This whole thread is extremely offputting. Who cares whether someone likes Little Mix and doesn't care for Spice Girls? This whole competition is about people's opinions, none of you created Spice Girls, Little Mix, Viva Forever or Reggaeton Lento. There's a real pop snobbery jumping out here that I tend to think this forum is better than, there's no need to question why anybody voted for anything or why anyone enjoys any song more than another song. Taste is subjective, enjoy the competition.

Gaslighting? Definitely not. This is merely a discussion about songs and how people react to them. Or at least it should be. I don’t understand why it’s become this heavy.

My first post about Viva Forever was actually somewhat tongue in cheek: (by the 4 people on the planet who feel this way, who all happen to be on BuzzJack funnily enough ohmy.gif There’s no one else who feels the same xox). This was meant to set the tone that my post was not intended to be personal towards anyone specifically.

I don’t understand why this has become so heavy. You’re the one who was all “Jesus Christ” about it in the first place, and accused others of “policing your opinions”. That’s not what was happening. It’s simply a discussion of opposing views. That’s the nature of a forum. You don’t have to justify anything.

I don’t care if you like Viva Forever or not! It was never specifically about you. My original post was a general comment about my love for the song & that I’m not being able to relate to or begin to understand the hate it receives from some. That’s my shared opinion~ just like yours.

I’m sure everyone here has felt surprised/confused/curious about how/why other forum posters don’t like certain songs. Discussing these differing views... is interesting? It’s not an attack. You seemed to take it as a personal attack. I can only speak for myself but that wasn’t my intention.

I always feel incredibly bewildered when Viva Forever gets hated on (by the 4 people on the planet who feel this way, who all happen to be on BuzzJack funnily enough :o There’s no one else who feels the same xox). I just can’t imagine being unable to appreciate such a beautiful song! :( Or at least be able to tell that it’s a great song, even if it’s not really your thing. To think it’s outright bad and feel a passionate hatred towards it, well that completely mystifies me.

It’s such a rousing, romantic, emotional, wistful and beautiful song. Their vocals and the stunning production conveys the sentiment of the lyrics perfectly. All in all, I really think it’s a masterpiece. Not just one of Spice Girls’ best, but one of the best songs to come from any girl group!

^ Jay's original post on the subject, for the record. I think it's pretty clear that it's Jay's own opinion and he was expressing his surprise that anyone could miss the beauty of the track (which is an opinion that's shared with a LOT of people! which naturally makes the dislike seem quite noticeable). There's no gaslighting, that's a VERY strong term to use:

A form of intimidation or psychological abuse, sometimes called Ambient Abuse where false information is presented to the victim, making them doubt their own memory, perception and quite often, their sanity. The classic example of gaslighting is to switch something around on someone that you know they're sure to notice, but then deny knowing anything about it, and to explain that they "must be imagining things" when they challenge these changes.

A more psychological definition of gaslighting is "an increasing frequency of systematically withholding factual information from, and/or providing false information to, the victim - having the gradual effect of making them anxious, confused, and less able to trust their own memory and perception.

I don't believe that anybody in this thread is guilty of gaslighting, and it seems to have somehow become heated very quickly on both sides. We all have opinions and I think we're all capable of debating and discussing them without it descending into snobbery and accusations. If we all thought the same, there'd be no need for a forum...! (this is speaking GENERALLY, not specifically about any one person)

Ps anyone who hasn't voted Spice Girls yet and continues not to with Viva Forever, is clearly never intending to vote for them, the song is a masterpiece!

This has to be a joke!? You don't see the appeal of the Spice Girls but stan Little Mix? Make it make sense

None of these are "discussion" comments, I so disagree with the idea people were trying to ignite some healthy discussion. They're snobbish replies to the idea that Defaze was in some way stupid for not caring about a Spice Girls song and loving a Little Mix song. The latter really IS policing opinions and being extremely condescending, totally against the spirit of the competition.

I'm really over seeing these kind of "Ariana would've been out if people didn't vote for the names" type of comments which also come back to this idea that people's opinions can't POSSIBLY be real because they don't match your own opinion. Please can we all just respect other people's opinions and stop this elitism? It's not fun. If you want to discuss people's opinions, just quote them with a sense of kindness and diplomacy (as I think Jay did, it just came amongst a barrage of other accusatory posts so I think ideas of gaslighting on that front are a little bit jumping the gun).
