Tbf everything that I have read suggests we will only have small doses of the Pfizer vaccine and the preference is for the Oxford one. I don't know the prices are factored in, but I've seen it suggested the Oxford trial one will be manufactured at £2.81 and the Pfzier one is closer to £30. Obviously I assume they will pay whatever cost to at least get some doses, but the cost and logistics of the vaccine suggest our preference would be for another vaccine.

That's if the Oxford one works. The government has ordered 40m doses of the Pfizer one, If it gets full clearance, I would guess they will be expecting all 40m to be delivered.

The word on the grapevine is the Oxford one also works (the data is due within the next couple of weeks) I'm pretty confident they will all work to some level. Ordering as much as possible seems the logical solution as it sounds like it will be a yearly vaccine similar to the flu job now, at least in the short term at least while they work on making a more effective one.

As JVT mentioned earlier, the key is making sure the vaccine is available through the NHS and it doesn't become a case of if you have the money you can pay for it privately. Not just for the UK, for the world, the key to us really getting out of this mess is for the more vulnerable and deprived to have access to the vaccine rather than vaccinating on who can afford it. It will be interesting to see what approach the world takes.

Wonder if the vaccine will be available to pay for privately. Suppose many people would pay £20, even a lot more for it. Doubt it though as it would take iy away from the ones needing it the most.
Everytime you think it’s stabilising, it just gets worse

Not really, for all we know it could be a delay in the results being processed. It's only worrying if it continues to be 30,000+ each day. The lockdown taking effect should really be beginning to show effect from early next week.

Yuuuuup!

Thought lockdown had started to bite and level it off here and then we shattered our one day record for the city 🤦🏼‍♂️

It's the same here in Iceland, seemed like we were well and truly on the downward slope with the second wave, but yesterday we bit of a spike from 18 to 26.

Mind you, population is so small here it could just be normal fluctuations. Lol

COVID restrictions in Northern Ireland are being extended until the end of next week, after which hairdressers/salons and non-alcoholic eating establishments can reopen.
I'd happily pay $100 for the vaccine if that's what it was going for. Small price to pay to get real life back!

It won't though, it just means you have an extremely high chance of being covid free. I think most people would happily pay $100 for the vaccine if they could afford to. But the only way we are going to get out of this pandemic is by vaccinating the people that actually take up the hospital space or a susepticle to carrying and spreading the virus on to real people. I'm totally against private consumption of the vaccination. If it starts being who can afford to pay the vaccine then we will be stricken with covid for years rather than one singular year.

I completely agree. Mass vaccination to attain heard immunity through vaccination, like with measles, polio, TB etc, is our only way out of this storm

Neither of us will have the vaccine in a million years. Wife's employer, who is a scientist, says vaccines usually take years to develop so this that's been developed in weeks rings alarm bells for her. They won't have it and neither will we. Too much is unknown about it. Look at Thalidomide in the 60's. However her sister, who is a busy London GP, says she'll have it and recommend that her patients do too. She's already being asked if she thinks it'll be safe though.

I assume the take up will be very high but some like us will refuse it.

Look Chris, no one will force you to take the vaccine but people who refuse it are idiots. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but if people would rather die than have a sore arm for a few days or a mild fever then that is their choice. If your wife's employer actually understood the vaccine research then he would know that the reswarch has actually been going on for years and they have copied the same coronavirus genetic code. But if he feels Bill Gates is going to microchip everyone then that's his perogative.

If it passes the safety checks, it's safe. No ifs no buts.

Weeks? It has taken more than 9 months of concerted and dedicated research across the world.

Your "scientist" employer is just scaremongering. Feel free not to take the vaccine, but should you contract Covid-19 and suffer you can't exactly complain about it.

It's a SHE actually and she does as she's a cell scientist with more degrees and PHD's than I can only dream of. I could link to her to prove I'm not fibbing as Google brings her straight up, but won't do. It's not a sore arm or mild fever we're worried about but the unknown. As I say, her sister, a GP, is for the vaccine.

I was undecided until Nita just told me what she said to her on Thursday. No way are they having it and their daughter won't either.

Well considering you 'suddenly changed your mind' and predicted a Donald Trump win on the 3rd November, I'll expect you'll change your mind again.

No I won't now. I trust her.

Nita won't even have the flu jab and I've heard that as a nanny she gets it free. I have it every year though.

Let's hope the government make your continuing financial support being contingent on you taking the vaccine then! :D

Having degrees and PhDs doesn't make you a vaccine expert. If it gets approved through the correct safety channels (which it will do) then it is safe. So you would rather believe her over someone whose full-time job it is to asses the safety risk of a vaccine?

Way too many anti-vax nutjobs about these days.

The fact that you had to bring up the 60's, when research was far less extensive, less progressed and not the plentyfull of vaccines that have been released ever since tells me you're just trynna get a reaction so here it is

Let's hope the doctors don't take the same lacklustre approach when it comes to your health if you contract Ms Rona.
