Big hits i guess mean big playlists for streaming

Does an album have to have big hits to sell well though? Its a bit of an excuse no?

Artists and record companies need to work promo and thinking out of the box etc

I disagree, it depends on how much worst it does. It's not the same having a drop of 10% in sales than having a 50% drop.

Sure, but

actually what you have to do is compare it to Thank U Next but put it into context

'Thank U, Next' opened with 65k in February 2019. The album era started 3 months earlier and before the album dropped there were already 2 massive number one singles from it. While lead single from 'Positions' was released only a week before the album. So the album came out of nowhere and there wasn't really that much hype and anticipation for it.

With the lack of proper album campaign were we really expecting it to do 65k as 'Thank U, Next' or even 50k? I definitely wasn't. But still its lead will probably spend two weeks at number one plus all 14 songs from the album are currently top 60 on Spotify UK. So if we put it into context I think it's not that bad.

For me

that's how you do. proper analysis

Ari's sales are definitely lower than I was expecting ngl (maybe not helped if website sales haven't been shipped yet?) but there was really no chance it was ever going to do as well as 'thank u, next' - at the end of the day it's still a #1 album with a multi-week #1 single from it, she's doing just fine.

Sam's sales are really a big oof though. If you'd told me the other day Ari would be on 13.5k in the first mids I'd have taken that as a guaranteed #1 for Sam. I really didn't think they had lost this much album sales clout. A shame when this has been easily their best singles run to date.

I could see Sam doing decently in the long run if only because the album is loaded with 2 years of hits on it that'll retain streams akin to Dua Lipa's first album.
I need Ariana to release her next album by March and go full pop bangers (and maybe that's her plan, who knows :kink:) and make the next era bigger than this one (just the way she did with Sweetener and TUN)!!!!

It’s something she’d probably do  but I think after this album it would be beneficial if she had a full year without releasing anything to try and build up hype for AG7.

Id be more for Ariana taking a break, i think from over exposure i just went off her, the same happened with Rihanna a few years back, it was just non stop.

Rihanna and Ariana are similar in certain ways in terms of their huge success across the singles charts and how relentless they can be at releasing. She’s the Rihanna of the late 10’s early 20s for sure.

It’s crazy to think that since Rihanna’s last album we’ve had four albums from Ariana as well

Will Capaldi finally fall out of the top 10? Or does he have something up his sleeve?
I mean, positions is definitely a flop. That’s like saying Madame X was a roaring success in the US because it reached #1. It’s all relative.

FINALLY!

Positions (the lead single) is not even in the same league as Thank u next...

Thank u next was an infectious pop anthem with massive appeal, Positions sounds at best like a Janet Jackson B-Side from 1993.... so the comparison is unfair.... therefore the new album was never going to be as successful as the former....

Something tells me you haven’t heard a Janet Jackson B-side from 1993. The difference between Ariana and Janet is that Janet switched up her sound... her albums don’t sound the same start to finish yet they all have a cohesive theme. Ariana just isn’t that versatile

FINALLY!

It’s like reputation all over again. An album can still be a big seller and be a flop if it’s nowhere near as big a seller as their last album. MJ’s Invincible sold 10 million and is still regarded as a flop.

The release rollout is completely different to 'thank u, next'. So they are uncomparable.

Fan excuse bingo... folklore’s rollout is completely different from Lover’s and it’s performing slightly better. I don’t understand this argument, surprise releases aren’t that rare anymore and it hasn’t hindered anyone of Taylor or Beyoncé’s caliber as the music has been up to par. Ariana’s just isn’t

He was at #18 yesterday and I could definitely see him overtaking at least 8 of the albums in the #7 to #17 range (albeit without me knowing the sales for those at the upper end of that scale).

It's interesting how much energy people go into wanting artists to flop just because they don't like the material. A #1 single and album is nowhere near a flop but some of you are unwilling to listen and seem to take pleasure in it "flopping" for some reason. Boredom maybe?

Either way, Ariana remains unbothered.

Well it’s my personal opinion but Ariana’s single is just not very good and I think she’s really overrated. Her best music was just before she became more successful and since then the quality of her music has declined sharply.
