November 3, 20205 yr It's interesting how much energy people go into wanting artists to flop just because they don't like the material. A #1 single and album is nowhere near a flop but some of you are unwilling to listen and seem to take pleasure in it "flopping" for some reason. Boredom maybe? Either way, Ariana remains unbothered. It’s more about trying to validate their personal opinion that the album is not good and being able to say ‘i told you so’. Petty and unnecessary.
November 3, 20205 yr It’s more about trying to validate their personal opinion that the album is not good and being able to say ‘i told you so’. Petty and unnecessary. Exactly, it's fine if you don't like the album, it's not her most commercial and I get it. I personally love it but I'm not going to force anyone to feel that way. I wouldn't even call Justin's recent era a flop and I hated that, and that iirc did worse than what Ariana is doing now. The only real flop from this year is something like Katy Perry (unfortunately).
November 3, 20205 yr Something tells me you haven’t heard a Janet Jackson B-side from 1993. The difference between Ariana and Janet is that Janet switched up her sound... her albums don’t sound the same start to finish yet they all have a cohesive theme. Ariana just isn’t that versatile of course i have heard a Janet B-side, i’m a massive fan of hers and her 1993 Janet album is one of my top 10 albums of all time... what i meant is that the new Ariana album is trying to sound like the early 90s pop/R&B female singers such as Janet & Mariah while the outcome is nowhere near as good...
November 3, 20205 yr I think people are ultimately mistaking an under performance for a flop. I'd have definitely said Ari would be closer to about 40k-50k than she's currently projected to do, but I actually think releasing 'positons' a week before kinda sucked hype away a little bit. Casual interest isn't as strong with that as it would be if she came back with another song (something like ntltc or 7 rings etc..) this is a lot more subdued and had she just released the album instead of going with a single a week before, I could definitely have seen a stronger opening week sales for her. I do think this is going to hold up quite decently in all honesty. So the Madame X comparison is completely and utterly absurd. It's not going to do 'thank u, next' numbers, but it's going to be the usual kind of decline in sales that every major artist has at some point in their career. Some of you are acting like it's over for her, with added bitterness just coz of your personal feelings about the album. It's doing fine, under performing slightly - sure, but it's not a flop. EDIT: Weren't some of you also claiming tu,n to be a flop, despite it being one of the biggest albums on streaming?

Exactly like some of y’all seem to rejoice every Christmas when the OCC scams Mariah out of a #1. And btw, the Madame X comparisons were in response to people claiming a #1 peak automatically makes something not a flop. For Madonna’s standards in 2019 Madame X did pretty well but is still considered a flop, whereas y’all take offence to us branding Ariana at her peak opening with similar numbers as also a flop... make it make sense Edited November 3, 20205 yr by No Sleeep
November 3, 20205 yr of course i have heard a Janet B-side, i’m a massive fan of hers and her 1993 Janet album is one of my top 10 albums of all time... what i meant is that the new Ariana album is trying to sound like the early 90s pop/R&B female singers such as Janet & Mariah while the outcome is nowhere near as good... I don’t think it sounds anything like them, and I’m the biggest Janet and Mariah fan on this site :P it sounds more like the pretentious PBR&B you’d expect Tinashe and Jhené Aiko to make
November 3, 20205 yr I don't think this sounds anything like Tinashe at all? Like, nothing at all? The closest to Tinashe for me is 'west side' and even that's just flourishes. This definitely reminds me of early to mid 90's Mariah (not sure about Janet as I haven't heard any of her albums ) and I'm making my way through Mariah's discography now (I'm struggling with this period as they're all blending a bit to me but, we'll see)
November 3, 20205 yr Why does one need to insult and belittle music genres one does not understand / isn't a fan of? okdotcom :/
November 3, 20205 yr Definitely see the Mariah comparisons but do not see the Janet comparisona at all? Mariah and Janet are world's apart musically when you listen to their albums.
November 3, 20205 yr What's wrong with Tinashe and Jhene Aiko? I don't get this thread at all.. Anything that's even slightly going outside of the mainstream pop whore realm is deemed bad and 'pretentious'. Apparently.
November 3, 20205 yr Why does one need to insult and belittle music genres one does not understand / isn't a fan of? okdotcom :/ Lol, I love R&B and it makes me mad to see this album being branded R&B. It’s just not. And the Ariana stans that have overnight became experts and the authority on what qualifies as R&B upsets me. I don’t even like her pop albums either. Just because something is slow and monotonous does not make it R&B. Vocally yes it’s Mariah inspired but production wise, lyrically, musically there are no other similarities. Certainly not to Janet either. positions is the Frank Ocean and Jhené Aiko ~vibey~ “R&B”, not real R&B
November 3, 20205 yr Anything that's even slightly going outside of the mainstream pop whore realm is deemed bad and 'pretentious'. Apparently. Hah, my username is named after a Janet Jackson song. An actual slow jam R&B song. Try again

Great logic. Put down all artists who do anything slightly out of the box and experiment with genres. Stifle creativity. The toxicity of pop stans. I just can't.

You are the one that branded me a close-minded pop stan all because I don’t like one album. Ariana isn’t immune to criticism
November 3, 20205 yr And by the way, I said “pretentious PBR&B”. It’s a subgenre. You might wanna amend that
November 3, 20205 yr You are the one that branded me a close-minded pop stan all because I don’t like one album. Ariana isn’t immune to criticism There's a difference between criticism and going out of your way to express dislike and disdain time after time when it's not necessary or appropriate all while dragging other completely irrelevant to the discussion black artists through mud.
