April 23, 20214 yr Probably suffered from the Brazilian variant which is allegedly more vaccine-resistant? I'm guessing that although cases remained high the vaccine rollout should have meant fewer resulting deaths but I don't know and also haven't heard much since that initial report a few weeks back.
April 23, 20214 yr Chile has also used one of the Chinese jags primarily and the effectiveness of that against the Brazil strain seems to be fairly crap. Other vaccines however are effective and Chile iirc is adjusting it’s roll out to use more of other vaccines - and tbh there’s so little readily available peer reviewed science on the Chinese vaccines we have no idea how effective they actually are beyond Chinese state propaganda. Some evidence says it’s solid on par with AZ against B117 and others say it’s barely over the WHO 50% efficacy threshold. We won’t know truly how good it is unless these companies put them to a robust regulator like the MHRA, EMA or FDA for approval. The local broadcaster RBB here did an investigation on positive cases after vaccination. Found 150 cases in the 300k That have been double jagged. 88 were asymptomatic and 62 were symptomatic. 6 of the Symptomatic required hospital treatment but none went into ICU or Died. Great real world evidence appearing that the vaccines are incredibly effective, right up there with the likes of MMR and DTAP. Incredible scientific effort to produce such remarkable results in 12 months. And I’m my opinion, catching it while vaccinated isn’t a statistic we should be concerned about. Because a vaccine doesn’t really stop you getting something, it teaches your body to fight it when it comes across it. So there will be people that register a positive test, or have a couple of mild symptoms, while the immune system does what it was taught. The only stat that really matters is showing the difference in infections, hospitalisations and deaths between unvaccinated populations and vaccinated populations. That shows these vaccines are extremely effective as well as being extremely safe. A further case study by RBB in Neukölln of 500 vaccinated people (⅔ care home residents and ⅓ staff) found 2% of vaccinated people caught Covid after 1 dose. The number who caught it within 4 weeks of the 2nd dose was 0,4% and nobody got it more than 4 weeks after the second dose. Backs up the science we’ve seen that shows one dose provides a strong level of protection but full power is achieved a couple of weeks after dose 2.
April 23, 20214 yr I had my first vaccine dose on Tuesday, I just went to one of the local centres around 6pm and they were giving out spares at the end of the day to anyone who wanted them - I’m 32 so could have been waiting a while longer otherwise! It was the AZ one so still restricted to 30 and above, and I was able to book my second dose online for the first week of July. Worth giving it a try as long as you time it right, they said I was one of the only first doses they’d done all day as they’re generally doing seconds right now. But had I not been there it would have been wasted so I didn’t “steal” it from anyone who needed it more.
April 23, 20214 yr That's how I see it as well, the only thing that could really catch us out would be a third wave August/September time and the vaccine protection potentially weakening on the more vulnerable in society whilst we work through boosters. But we can't say for any certainty with that yet as we don't know. The hokey cokey with international travel too could be a problem. Did we end up finding out why Chile had quite high levels of infections but also a high vaccination rate? That kind of went under the radar and I haven't heard anything about it since really. In Chile, it seems to be issues with the unvaccinated population under 60? @1384878143308173313 @1384878176246112259
April 24, 20214 yr So for the first time since just before my birthday back in September, today I went into Chester with my brother and went into retail shops and had a take away drink. It was so lovely to see people out and about again. Last year I was really nervous about being around others but today it was so lovely to see and I felt quite relaxed. It was busy but only outside and we were never near any one person long enough for me to be concerned. Shops were all pretty good inside. Such a lovely morning. I visited my parents in the afternoon, however, and it was a bad one. I’m becoming a bit more immune to their conspiracy theories but today there were explaining to me why there was never any need to lockdown. They moan about having their freedoms taken away and yet have no desire to go anywhere when things open up. I just can’t win when they’re in this mood.
April 24, 20214 yr Another pointless anti-lockdown protest today in London. They obviously wanna stay in lockdown and don’t realise that we’re nearly out of lockdown completely

Thanks - I'd never really thought of that, I often pass by our local vax centre on way home from work and wonder if they've spares or I'd just be getting in the way, I guess now is more likely than back when the rollout started. I'll give it a go next week. : ) Btw am loving the continental style pub experience, at table service all night this eveningg and shout out to Dominos who delivered TO THE PUB. Amazing. :D
April 25, 20214 yr Another pointless anti-lockdown protest today in London. They obviously wanna stay in lockdown and don’t realise that we’re nearly out of lockdown completely It does seem silly, most of the things we can’t do now, we will be able to do in 3 weeks and if all goes well, we’ll be doing pretty much everything a month after that. I wonder if they’ll claim victory when the restrictions are lifted on the day we were told they will be lifted? My parents are the weirdest. The talk like they’re anti lockdown and anti mask and yet follow the rules and wear masks when they’re out and about. The only thing they’ve been consistent with is not getting vaccinated and even then it doesn’t fit their desire to get back to ‘normal’. I’ve told my brother, who’s 35 in just over a month, to try his luck passing a vaccination centre at the end of the day as there will probably be spares going.

This is proof in the pudding we need vaccine passports to weed out these nutters :D probably part of the same nutjob "experts" who have been in the Express/Telegraph today stating lockdown should end now,

While its true that if the R rate is low enough young people should have the freedom to take risks and go to nightclubs without masks or distancing, its far too early this summer I think to end such rules or guidelines in supermarkets, train stations and public transport which everyone uses, especially in urban areas that can become very busy at times. They are honestly a bunch of w*n**rs. I'm not saying it will happen, but India is a timely reminder for what can happen if you live in deniability. The virus is still spreading round, thankfully we can let those idiots go about with their daily lives. I can't see masks ending until 2022. Problem the Government will have is there will be some form of social distancing this winter, so if you completely scrap it in the summer then it's gonna be hard to maintain again come the winter.
April 28, 20214 yr Author The scenes out of India in particular in and around Delhi are truly awful and absolutely heartbreaking - Even from a non-altruistic viewpoint (i.e. nobody is safe until everyone is safe), it's madness that there hasn't been a global effort to get the vaccine out to the lower-income countries faster by waiving patents like with Smallpox. I don't buy the upscaling issue, it's totally about greed and it is a disgrace IMO.
April 28, 20214 yr So much public Money went into their development, they absolutely should be IP waivers in place. Ok maybe it’s a case of waiving it for the next 12-18 months until we’re through the pandemic but it needed to be done months ago. Waiving it now won’t fix much quickly given how long it takes to stand up production sadly
April 28, 20214 yr Surely waiving the IP would do little? Lots of the hold-ups are from countries holding up raw materials needed, not just the vaccine itself. There is definitely an argument for us sharing more vaccines with lower income countries rather than vaccinating our younger population. Especially now since we know a little bit more about how good the vaccines are for protecting against serious illness. The situation in India is crazy, especially when you consider the vast amount of underreporting there is likely to be.
April 28, 20214 yr The new Indian Variant discovered in the Punjab and East Bengal is slightly more infectious but also avoids antibodies reports are showing.
April 30, 20214 yr I very much disapprove of the Daily Mirror's front page today https://ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/976/cpsprodpb...r-300421-nc.png This top scientist they quote seems to forget that the vaccine is not 100% effective and also the existence of the SA, Brazil and Indian variants, which aren't dominant at the minute in the UK according to yesterday's government Covid briefing but I would think that as lockdown restrictions are eased probably will become way more common in the UK passing between younger people who are yet to be vaccinated and also between children in schools. Older and vulnerable people should continue to be very careful I think. The Telegraph front page is also worrying about no social distancing at big events, just because they found no increase in cases caused by trial events now (when we are at our lowest case numbers because of the lockdown anyway) doesn't mean there won't be by June 21st. https://ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/976/cpsprodpb...h-300421-nc.png Edited April 30, 20214 yr by TheSnake
April 30, 20214 yr Over 30s opening limited slots in Northern Ireland today from 10am. HOOK IT TO MY VEINS! (Both metaphorically and literally).
April 30, 20214 yr 1.1m doses given in Germany Wednesday. Highest daily volume of any European country and when adjusted for population would be like the US doing 3.5-4m doses in a day. Our programme is really starting to pick up speed now and the prioritisation will be lifted by June. So I’m desperately trying to get mine booked before it becomes an insane free for all 🤣🤣 I chased up my invite letter with the city so I should have that by the end of next week and with luck I should be fully vaccinated by July time. With BioNTech really motoring, they make 180m doses a month in the EU alone, the EU roll out is really starting to pick up and I think we will start to see the same dividends in the next month that the UK has. It’s already super visible in our underlying numbers that the over 70‘s haven’t been hit at all by the third wave in Berlin. At the peak of wave 2, just before Xmas, the 90+ bracket in Berlin had a 7 day rating of 1073. In the last full week of data that was 33 (currently 49.8 on a rolling 7 day basis). These vaccines really do work superbly well. The vaccinated population here is mainly 70+ (all incidence rates below 50 vs a city wide rate of 126) but with 880k+ now on one dose (24% of Berliners) we’re starting to see the vax effect. Finally feeling positive when looking at our stats again even if the headline rate is slow to fall because it’s primarily driven by school kids (10-14 incidence rates is 246, almost double the city wide rate) I very much disapprove of the Daily Mirror's front page today https://ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/976/cpsprodpb...r-300421-nc.png This top scientist they quote seems to forget that the vaccine is not 100% effective and also the existence of the SA, Brazil and Indian variants, which aren't dominant at the minute in the UK according to yesterday's government Covid briefing but I would think that as lockdown restrictions are eased probably will become way more common in the UK passing between younger people who are yet to be vaccinated and also between children in schools. Put down the internet and go be at one with nature. It isn’t healthy to be this relentlessly negative about every god damn little thing. Yes it’s still out there but no one has died of corona after being fully vaccinated and the vaccine taking full effect. The real world is showing these vaccines are remarkably effective, the mRNA ones in particular are proving to be more effective than most of the vaccines we have previously developed for things like DTaP and MMR. Incredible scientific breakthrough. Any breakthrough will be handled by a booster shot that all the developers are already working on and even the UK gov is preparing for boosters. There is *no reason* based on the data for you to be this relentlessly negative and sour about the World. It isn’t healthy *for you*
