Cases are down yes but there may be a number of reasons for that. It’s summer holidays and less testing is one. The euros was obviously a big factor too but also the hot weather has meant people are spending more time outdoors where the risks are lower. I suspect case numbers will increase again soon due to the impact of easing restrictions but today’s deaths are 131 and hospital admissions are just under 6000 so they both have gone up a lot!

The testing numbers are largely the same. What we're seeing in the deaths and hospitalisation numbers now is the lag from 2-4 weeks ago. I think case numbers will increase too, but not massively (famous last words). The impact of nightclubs open will be balanced by schools closed until September. In any case, I think it is positive news for now and proof of how good an effect the jabs are having.

I would guess that a lot of school staff and pupils have stopped doing their twice-weekly tests.

That’s incorrect, as stated above - lots of school staff and pupils are not being tested due to schools being closed and schools were where there was a hybrid of infections.

But school students and staff aren’t testing because they’re not attending right now and mixing in large numbers indoors. I’m not sure what you’re disagreeing with here.

He's disagreeing with Rooney saying the test numbers are largely the same, which isn't entirely true. There's been a noticeable drop since schools have closed, which should become more apparent as the week goes on.

Positivity rates are also slowly falling too, which is an unbiased way of judging prevalence regardless of the number of tests carried out.

That's good news. I think we'll see cases increase again slightly before decreasing a lot. There'll be a large amount of second vaccine doses in August which should translate into lower case rates etc come September.

But positive cases now up for a 2nd day running. "Freedom day" kicking in.

Always to be expected though, will be interesting to see how high it might get but I am not sure if we will go over 50,000 cases per day. Bit of a wait and see how this one plays out.

I’ve been into Liverpool city centre today to try and get a covid test. Two places where I usually get a test have been closed. I don’t know what’s going on in other places but it appears there is less testing and therefore reported case numbers will be lower. I think the government may be trying to manipulate the figures which paints a misleading picture!

I’ve been to Cardiff these last few days and I have to say, especially after the train journeys, I’d never really appreciated how good mask compliance was where I live. It’s not as amazing in other places.
Anyone know how quickly the virus shows up in tests? I got back from London yesterday and tonight I feel a bit rubbish (bit of a cough, general fatigue and slight breathlessness) but I tested negative on the home tests yesterday and today. I ordered a PCR test just to be sure but I can't seem to actually find any guidance online as to how quickly it would show up and if testing at this stage is pointless or not?

I think lateral flow tests only show when the viral load is when you're at the most infectious (so only for 4-5 days). Would say I had similar symptoms as you 7-10 days go but I think with people mixing more your body is just not used to it so loads of little viruses are going about that are not covid.

Cool. Thanks so much for your fast response. :)

Yeh same with me was out lastnyt and def feel like a cold today!

I managed to get a test today in Liverpool but had an interesting conversation with staff there. Last week, I went to two different sites where I’ve previously been tested but they were closed. Staff told me today that all the other major testing sites in Liverpool have been closed as they are reducing testing. staff also acknowledged that the current site is difficult to locate in terms of its location and not advertised well on the internet so many people wouldn’t know it exists and they are getting people coming for testing from a wide geographical area within Merseyside due to many other sites closing.

I don’t know what’s happening in other areas but clearly if testing is being reduced nationwide then the figures paint a very misleading picture about the true level of infections.

Yeh the government has likely told them to wrap it up and just keep an eye on hospital admissions so the news doesn’t focus on infections most of which aren’t affecting people as badly due to the vax being delivered to more and more!
Scotland will lift most of it’s remaining coronavirus restrictions from August the 9th, including the reopening of nightclubs and away fans fully being allowed back to stadiums! Face masks will still be mandatory and remain the law in all indoor public spaces like shops, public transport etc for some time to come. Not sure how this will work with pubs/clubs as you can’t be expected to wear a mask in a nightclub but this is technically still an indoor public space?
