I read today that even if there was a party, the Covid laws didn't apply to No.10 as it's Crown Property. Don't know if that's true or not. Maybe someone wants to look it up or knows for certain.

Even if that was the case, it wouldn’t matter to the rest of us. The fact is, they did what they wanted whilst the rest of us were having a miserable time but thinking we were all in it together.

There were plenty of people over the weekend saying that isn't the case. As others have said, it doesn't really matter. What matters is that people were sticking two fingers up to the rules that the rest of us were expecte4d to follow. I'm sure there was some loophole the queen could have used to have family members closer to her at her husband's funeral. She didn't do that.

We getting more restrictions then - they will prioritise family Christmases over everything else though. Maybe closing hopsitatility for a month in January.

Doesn't make much sense to me, the damage is gonna be done over December. Get the feeling "but Omicron is milder" is going be the new "they had underlying health conditions". I think it probably is milder, but relies on the fact people have at least one jab and a prior covid infection. For those people with no jab and no prior infection, sounds like it is still bad.

Why was there a red list in the first place? Everyone has canceled and been charged cancelation fees or refunded already. Majority won't rebook for the same dates

"South African variant" isn't as fatal as they feared. What was the point to ruin African economies and tourism businesses to help prevent the spread of a virus for 2 weeks which is all over the world anyway? Just shows they were wrong to do it in the first. Twice the amount of people are dying from murders here and no one cares.

Indeed it was a completely futile decision and only done for good PR. Everyone could see it had long since spread but they were trying to save face after Delta. Like I said previously this will only discourage countries for sharing data about any new variants.

It will be a full lockdown in January, that's my prediction. Even schools all closed.

I just don't see it somehow. How can they honestly enforce that after most of the population have been vaccinated? I think even they know that would be suicide for them, and furthermore they can’t encourage people to get vaccinated if they are still being subjected to lockdowns. It'll undo so much of the hard work they've done with the vaccination rollout. Plus economic damage they won't want to risk either.

I'll eat my hat if another full lockdown is announced.

Those "2 weeks" though are probably the difference between our hospitals being able to cope or not cope. Travel bans are an effective short term measure to limit the spread. There have been a few stories about Omicorn outbreaks in quarantine facilities here, so I'd say it's job done. It's bought us a bit of time so the UK knows what we are facing. Omicorn is still highly transmissable and while I get the African economy might have suffered, there's a chance our economy will collapse (obviously hyperbole) as everyone will be self-isolating with covid here.

I think it’s mad they have abandoned the red list countries. It’s like the Tories have learned nothing from last time. They are so focused on vaccination aspect but that isn’t going to stop the spread of new cases in the meantime. We need controls in place to prevent people being infected such as quarantine in relation to high risk countries. Yes, it’s already spread to some degree here anyway but you will never get a proper hold on the virus without other controls being put in place. I can now see another lockdown coming in January if hospital admissions rise sharply as predicted. The government were warned by health officials that further restrictions were needed by the 18th of this month to halt a massive surge but they appear to have done the opposite. Crazy and completely incompetent!

I really doubt those that booked holidays here in Southern Africa will rebook anyway. It's crazy how power has gotten to so many people in high places, the fear mongering and wrong discrimination against a country who was truthful with its scientific research they have created is disgraceful.

Lockdowns and travel bans do way more harm than good, especially tourism-reliant countries like the ones they put on the red list. Cost of living is up expentionentially here in SA since Boris did this 2 weeks ago. A litre of petrol now costs more than bread, electricity and water prices now 60% higher than they were a few months ago, tourism industry for the next 8 months in the pits again. Our hotel alone has lost in ZAR3 MILLION in 2 weeks.

We have a murder and gender based violence pandemic that's a consequence of the senseless tactics our leaders are taking against our country and it's people. 2 years in a row with this "South Africa" variant nonsense. 60-70 murders a day, compared to 10-20 Covid deaths a day during a Red list variant surge. You tell me which is worse?

Of course hospitals can cope, they and especially the lab scientists are rolling in money now more than ever! If our dreadful health system here in South Africa can cope and we are on level 1 restrictions, so can everybody else.

It’s not senseless tactics imposing covid related travel restrictions. You either impose restrictions to try and get some degree of control over the virus or risk the situation getting out of control which is now likely to happen. It’s also not just the U.K. which had imposed restrictions but many other countries such as the USA and they were based on medical evidence from the spread of the virus in your country. The lack of controls here will also mean the virus is likely to spread far easier to other countries too and make it more difficult to manage. In addition, South Africa has experienced high level of crime, poverty and social problems for a number of years prior to covid so you can’t blame that solely on covid travel restrictions although it is likely to exacerbate problems to some degree.

Not really. South Africa has a fairly younger population than most of Europe (~5% of pop is 65+ in SA compared to ~20% in Europe). It's also summer in South Africa, as opposed to Winter in Europe.

Yes that's true but it is much worse now than before the first lockdown due to unemployment and inflation. The only people not experiencing crime here are those involved in it now
