December 16, 20213 yr Wales have just announced that nightclubs will be closed from 27th December and social distancing required in offices. It begins. Edited December 16, 20213 yr by AdamG
December 16, 20213 yr Isn't it sort of good news that Omnicorn is more infectious and (apparently) less serious? Like, long term wouldn't it be better to have this as the dominant strain over Delta/Alpha?
December 16, 20213 yr If it infects 10x the number of people but has a hospitalisation rate half that of Delta then that’s still 5x the number of people going into hospital. So, no. It’s really not. It’d have to be really really really mild to mitigate it’s spreadability and the evidence says maybe it’s a little milder but not enough to outstrip how fast it spreads. Unchecked, this is the kind of variant that will truly f*** hospitals. Maybe not through severity but through sheer volume
December 17, 20213 yr Isn't it sort of good news that Omnicorn is more infectious and (apparently) less serious? Like, long term wouldn't it be better to have this as the dominant strain over Delta/Alpha? Yes, if everyone is vaccinated. The problem is there are still millions that are not. That’s gonna be the problem as the symptoms are only milder if you’ve been vaccinated. But as Silas points out, the sheer volume of infections is gonna cause hospitalisations, although fingers crossed people are not there for as long.
December 17, 20213 yr Author Isn't it sort of good news that Omnicorn is more infectious and (apparently) less serious? Like, long term wouldn't it be better to have this as the dominant strain over Delta/Alpha? @1471255933581991936 Soz to make light of it- but essentially they don't know whether the lower case to hospitalisation ratio is due to the vaccine, a genuine decrease in virulence, or a bit of both. Though as Phil and Roo have both said, if something is increasing exponentially then it really doesn't matter. It could be 10 times less serious but the exponential takes away/removes that apparent advantage in days (in terms of stresses on the NHS).
December 17, 20213 yr It is also worth remembering that if there are, for example, a couple million people (maybe many more) self-isolating with Omicron, many of them will be NHS staff.
December 18, 20213 yr Yes, if everyone is vaccinated. The problem is there are still millions that are not. That’s gonna be the problem as the symptoms are only milder if you’ve been vaccinated. That's not necessarily true. Many unvaccinated are asymptomatic or feel mild symptoms, too.
December 18, 20213 yr I really cba with the news of another lockdown post Christmas - January is a really difficult month for me as it is and selfishly it'll probably push me over the edge. I'm sorry but why should I get vaccinated, wear a mask, abide by the rules only for the selfish unvaccinated to have the same rules imposed on them. If there is a lockdown, it should be just for the unvaccinated - I know it's be hard to manage but we shouldn't all be punished!

The unvaccinated more so but even if you’ve had your jabs, you could still catch covid and spread it to others because the numbers of infections are so high and the new variant is 70 times more transmittable than delta. It wouldn’t work just implementing a lockdown for unvaccinated people and some of those who aren’t vaccinated are due to various reasons such as medical issues which would be discriminatory. December 18, 20213 yr True, I guess. But a lot aren't and are just conspiracy theorists / selfish people. I don't know, it seems unfair and I'm just bored of my plans getting ruined yet again. This isn't living. I'm just really frustrated.
December 18, 20213 yr After shoving us all back together in the office barely a month ago, our employer has re-implemented social distancing and sent a load of people home to WFH from Monday. Talk in the news today of a possible Plan C with a COBRA meeting expected this weekend. I won't be surprised if a lockdown does happen tbh we're almost there anyway. I've crammed a lot of socialising in these past few weeks, I don't even recognise myself anymore  but I'm not sure how I'd feel being couped up inside for weeks on end again. None of the lockdowns have been great on my mental health when I live alone.
December 18, 20213 yr We have a quasi lockdown for the unvaxxed and honestly I would like us to go further. I have been triple dosed, I don’t see how I should put my entire life on hold still because some gullible dipshits don’t know how to think critically and believe f***in anything they read on Facebook or telegram. Over it. Either get your jab or be prepared to get locked down in yer house until you do get it.
December 18, 20213 yr Author What was it Jens Spahn said? By the end of the winter, everyone in Germany will either be vaccinated, recovered from the virus or DEAD. Something like that anyway.

December 18, 20213 yr What was it Jens Spahn said? By the end of the winter, everyone in Germany will either be vaccinated, recovered from the virus or DEAD. Something like that anyway. Yeah that’s exactly what he said (after translation obvi) and he very much meant it. I think he’s right, especially with this omricon thing
December 18, 20213 yr I see Khan's declared a state of emergency in London. He says there'll be no police, firefighters or binmen working soon. It's all scaremongering. We don't know anyone who has Omicron. No-one. A nurse at Newham hospital that we know says it's not as bad as they make out. Certainly nowhere near as bad as last year.
December 18, 20213 yr Talk of a lockdown being announced on 27th for two weeks. Yet again screwing over millions of low paid hospitality workers, NHS staff and essential workers who'd go and see family over New Year. Office staff many of whom are on WFH and could easily go and see family whenever they wanted yet again getting to their Christmas plans protected though. No doubt going to cause a lot of people who would have went to see family in New Year to see them earlier, packing out trains. Yes it's a shit but at some point we need to learn to live with this shit and move on. Edited December 18, 20213 yr by ChristmasFridays
December 18, 20213 yr I agree, we can't just continue to have lockdown after lockdown when things get worse. People are going to lose jobs, suffer with their mental health and it's just not sustainable or a way of really living life. I get the NHS are overwhelmed completely and think SOME restrictions should be in place to alleviate that but not a full lockdown again ffs.

We don't know anyone who has Omicron. No-one. A nurse at Newham hospital that we know says it's not as bad as they make out. Certainly nowhere near as bad as last year. So if you don’t know anyone with omicron in London then it’s definitely being exaggerated? My sister is in London and currently has it but I guess she’s making it up too just to get one over on Johnson. I am worried about a potential lockdown at that time. My sister is due to visit me on 27th for a couple of days (she should be out of isolation by then) but it looks like that might not happen.
December 18, 20213 yr Author The public are largely against any further restrictions (unlike in the early part of the pandemic) so I think it's highly unlikely that anything will happen. Furthermore, Boris Johnson's authority is completely shattered anyway so it's doubtful he could introduce anything even if he wanted to. I think it's also worth pointing out that a lockdown would be completely pointless now anyway, the peak in hospitalisations that are coming are already baked in. The peak in cases will be very soon because Omicron is very transmissible.
