Allegedly a million invites have gone out for jags in Berlin but only 360k have taken up.

If that's true then that means vaccine scepticism is a big reason too that Germany isn't going faster in its vaccine rollout. It would be unsurprising considering the impact the temporary AstraZeneca vaccine suspension will have on vaccine confidence.

Note the rest of the paragraph you selectively quoted to suit your agenda. Berlin hasn’t had anywhere near that many doses delivered.

Although the avoidance of AZ at all costs is strong. Uptake for Moderna and BioNTech is high

I did preface my comment with 'if it is true' suggesting I didn't know whether it was true or not!

Former Brexit Party candidate Claire Fox showing quite the selfishness in her views on QT tonight -

First question - Should Brits be allowed to go abroad this summer on holidays - her general reply was of course we should be allowed to have the liberty to go and take advantage of the lovely Mediterranean weather much of it in Eu countries

Second question - Should Britain be giving some of their vaccine to other countries round the world and in the Eu - general response was f*** right off the big bad Eu are jealous of us and we signed legitimate contracts with vaccine providers and they are the bad guys here

Strange how there’s consistently 5-6k cases over the past 2-3 weeks

To be expected really, I suspect they will increase next week but then they reckon at Easter they will fall again. The key thing is the increase is in the school age groups and the infection levels are falling in the 60+. Proof will be in the pudding shortly to see how effective the vaccines are at stopping infections and hospitalisations. Sounds like they are doing OK so far. I'd probably expect our cases to rise gradually anyway with what is happening in Europe.

France had 45k+ cases today, I get the feeling they may find themselves in the unfortunate position the UK were in around Jan/Feb time. The good thing is we're heading towards summer where hopefully the virus circulation should be less of a threat.

Yeah the case rate in France is concerning.. but the Government worrying that these cases may 'wash up on our shores'.. er, what? Isn't it more our beloved UK 'gammon Kent' variant has washed up on THEIR shores?

Ye, this wave is due to the UK/Kent variant becoming the dominant strain in Europe. Unfortunately we're likely going to see a lot of scenes across Europe being similar to the UK earlier this year because of the slow vaccine rollout. :(

Also has anyone seen the data coming out of Brazil? Recording breaking cases and deaths continuing with over 3,000 deaths a day now. I hope that vaccine production/supply ramps up and gets a lot to Brazil. It's so tragic seeing what's going on there, as well as being a breeding ground for mutations.

It's not really the UK/Kent strain though is it? I find the whole blame culture stuff a little counterproductive. Everyone said Trump was silly for calling it the China virus.. yet we're all doing the same stuff. The Brazil/UK/South Africa strains were only indentified there due to gene testing.

The stuff out of Brazil is mad too. Horrible situation there and it looks like the current wave is really affecting the young too.

Sadly despite many countries trying there was too much of a patchwork of travel blocks over the EU and the Kent strain is now dominating Europe so we are in the third wave that y’all have already had because y’all could stay on plague f***in island for two dann minutes. Over literally a month in Germany it’s gone from being like 8% to 80% of our cases.

And to the surprise of literally no one with functional brain cells, it’s the f***in schools that are driving the infection. Consistently in Berlin 30-39 has had the highest incidence rate outside of the coffin dodgers but coz they’ve mostly been jagged they’re at the bottom of the pile so it should be the 30-39 leading And powering the new wave along with the 25-29 and 20-24 bracket. They’re the largest age groups in Berlin because it’s such an immigrant Heavy City. BUT current number 1 by a longshot is actually 5-9!!! Shut the f***ing schools until we can get more folks jagged. Sick to the teeth of being locked up all day so we can let the kids go to school when that’s literally the only f***in way it’s spreading at this point.

On the plus side Berlin did 50000 vaccinations today or yesterday or whatever the day is on the stats. Which is like massive. Think it’s maybe a catch up from a couple of days of AZ (about 40k was AZ) but if we can keep up the pace we might actually make headway soon. Now more than 10% of Berlin has had a dose. So we’re on track.

Mayor talking about when our stocks start to rapidly increase in Q2 because BioNTech are stunners and have shittonnes of doses to deliver in Q2 then we might scrap the priority rank and turn it on it’s head to vaccinate the young folks first instead of the older lot because they’re all turning up their nose at AZ and it’s really slowing down our roll out. Finally a German politician willing to be creative so let’s just wait and see if he follows through.

We can chose our centre which chooses our jag so imma be honest, I’m probably gonna wait and stalk the booking site when my letter comes and pounce on a slot for the Moderna or BioNTech one. Aim is Moderna because it’s a 10-15 min walk from the house to the centre. I cba dragging my ass to one of the former airports for the AZ one even if I could have it the same day as I got the letter coz the second dose of that is coming 12 weeks later so waiting like 3 weeks to get in for an mRNA is fine coz I’d actually end up fully protected earlier. Plus the AZ side effects are nasty when you’re younger.

It is tho. The virus mutates where it is allowed to run freely and unchecked. It did in England and this is the mutation we got from it. Same for Brazil. Same for Italy 12 months ago, the first wave was mainly the Italian strain for Europe. Same for Spain. That drove Europe’s second wave. The reason they’re not called out as variants is that the mutation didn’t make it more transmittable or harmful. Like Scotland could pin point that after it hit near elimination it was reseeded by Scots going to Spain and folks coming up from parts of England.

Coz because you don’t like to be the Root cause doesn’t mean you aren’t. It’s not a blame culture, it’s just facts. That strain is now dominant in spite of efforts to keep it out.

Nobody was calling it the China virus or the Spanish variant last year though, that's my point. We don't have a US or Mexican variant running around because they do not do half as much as the genetic sequencing, despite the virus circulating just as wild. The root cause of all this is China, not England or Italy or Spain. The State has washed their hands of it and pointed their fingers at their neighbours. We can argue all we want, but the truth is Europe relies on imports and exports with all our neighbours that despite whatever measures are put in place, there's always another way for the virus to get in.

Wasn’t the original thread on this literally first called ‘Wuhan virus’?

It was yes but it was changed because the media started calling the virus coronavirus more. It wasn't because of Donald Trump's terminology, he only started using 'China virus' well after the threads name was changed iirc.

I never once said it was because of Trump, the point is that the virus had been named after a place at some point so there’s absolutely no need to get offended when a variation that was discovered in the UK is referred to as the UK variant.

Though if anyone should take offence it should be Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland being tarred with the same brush as England.

Yes it was, but the WHO quite rightly came up with its official name of covid-19 to stop Asian hate. Just because the variant was first discovered here, does not necessarily mean it was ‘born’ here. Through our science we discovered the variant, just like we can also discover other variants quicker due to the volume of testing scientists do here due to the scale we have. Less virus circulation also means we have a better chance of picking up if there are any mutations.

But it was the UK media that started calling it the UK variant and the UK government that made such a fuss out of it. Just like they call other variants by where they came from like South Africa and Brazil. I just don’t see what’s worth getting offended about.

Imagine how the Spanish feel that the 1919 pandemic which killed millions is known in the history books as the Spanish Flu and yet it was originally from an army camp in the US Midwest which ended up being prevalent in the trenches in March 1918 and only became the ‘Spanish Flu’ because during the war Spain was the first country to report it as they werent involved in the war and so their media wasn’t controlled and when it came to Madrid they freely advised of this strange new disease.

Bickering over what to call a virus that is literally killing millions and infecting millions more is not remedial, nor is it useful in any sense. Call it COVID-19 because that what’s it is. If you are referring to a specific strain, then to label it after the place that it was first discovered is not “blaming” or “pointing fingers”, it’s a form of identification/separation.

Honestly, who cares what mutation is doing what at this point? It’s all the same horrific disease that has quite literally put the whole planet on pause for a year, why dignify it with a petty argument over what to refer to it as? Calling a spade a spade is not wrong, but is also pretty redundant when the whole bloody garden shed’s on fire.

The worst thing we can do as a species is to start generalizing entire countries as the culprit of something that is ripping our world apart, this is how xenophobia and casual racism become ingrained in our common thought. The virus is enemy number-one here, not each other.
