January 3, 20214 yr I’m not confident there’ll be a u-turn today, I think they may wait until tomorrow. They need to have teachers not turn up and chaos so that they can blame any change on the unions and vilify the teachers.
January 3, 20214 yr Our school are having an "emergency training day" tomorrow and so won't be open for kids! The u-turn needs to happen sooner rather than later so as to not unnecessarily risk the lives of thousands. it'll happen later next week though once everyone has mixed and potentially been infected.
January 3, 20214 yr Good to know that Boris has no doubt that schools are safe to open. A month ago he had no doubt that Christmas would be normal and that more things will be open by then.
January 3, 20214 yr It truly is the most incompetent government of all time! Of course it's not. Jim Callaghan's was from '76 to '79 and hence he didn't get elected. You may be too young to remember rubbish piling up, the dead unburied etc etc. Edward Heath's, 70 to 74 wasn't much better, 3 day week, power cuts... Edited January 3, 20214 yr by common sense
January 3, 20214 yr Author It hasn't been the NINETEEN-SEVENTIES for almost 50 years. Stop living in the past. Anyway.. more bad news. @1345696619707162624

Callaghan’ government had ministers of the calibrate of Denis Healey, Merlyn Rees, Shirley Williams and Tony Crosland. None of Johnson’s shower are fit to lick their boots.
January 3, 20214 yr It hasn't been the NINETEEN-SEVENTIES for almost 50 years. Stop living in the past. He said worst Government of all time so I had to correct him.
January 3, 20214 yr He said worst Government of all time so I had to correct him. You’re still wrong. As I said above, Callaghan’s government had ministers who commanded respect even if you disagreed with them. The current talentless numpties? Not so much.
January 3, 20214 yr You’re still wrong. As I said above, Callaghan’s government had ministers who commanded respect even if you disagreed with them. The current talentless numpties? Not so much. I'd say policies and competence to deal with what comes up is more important though. Maybe just me.
January 3, 20214 yr I'd say policies and competence to deal with what comes up is more important though. Maybe just me. And where are these policies in the current lot? Where is the competence?
January 3, 20214 yr Author As per yesterday's data, massive spikes in positivity rates in test results from ALL regions now. The trend in test positivity since Christmas is genuinely scary, with lines climbing almost vertically in all English regions. On Christmas eve 17% of tests in London came back positive. Four days later that was 24% and accelerating Hard to see a reason for a distinction between ' primary schools in London ' and 'primary schools elsewhere ' with this data in mind, but at least it's consistent with the current government strategy of letting things spiral out of control until they have no option but to act.
January 3, 20214 yr I'd say policies and competence to deal with what comes up is more important though. Maybe just me. With everything thrown at that government, they still gave the impression that they had some idea of what they were doing. I loathed Thatcher but at least she knew what she was doing.
January 3, 20214 yr The fact that 1/4 of tests are coming back positive in London is very scary. :( They are likely going to need a full lockdown for a month with schools shutting. But they won't act until it's too late like usual.
January 3, 20214 yr My cousin in London works with the police and he has just had a positive test result. He got tested on Wednesday so it’s taken a while to come back. He’s been isolating in his room since then but now his mum, dad and brother must isolate too.
January 3, 20214 yr @1345735975251697665 Reports now out that Scotland is looking at deferring schools further than 18th and into February

That is actually tragic. I remember Belgium reached a peak of 1400 per 100k, but I think that was in 14 days even and some of our hospitals in the Wallonian region were on the verge of collapse. Is it showing any signs of slowing down at all???
January 3, 20214 yr Well with the data you can see why London has schools closed and the rest of Tier 4 areas don't. However, why doesn't they just create a Tier 5 out of nowhere which might at least help with some of the messaging? All very grim though. And of course you win the risk of other areas getting in to such a mess as London, but I don't think that will be the case. You have such a large amount of people across such a small area that London is a unique example imo. The South East has not gone on as sharp a curve as London at least which is something. It does seem this new variant is spreading like wildfire, but we can hope it almost makes itself less potent.
January 3, 20214 yr Author And of course you win the risk of other areas getting in to such a mess as London, but I don't think that will be the case. On what basis do you make that conclusion? The same one that had London in Tier 2 at the end of lockdown and ended up with this huge infection rate? Or is it the now inevitable spread of the more transmissible varient to the rest of the UK? Sir Keir speaks ... @1345764227412324353
January 3, 20214 yr As usual in this crisis, Starmer is right. If further restrictions in the short- to medium-term are inevitable, why not start now? That way there is a chance of them being needed for less time than if there is yet another delay to allow for Johnson's constant dithering.
