My brother spoke to Mark Drakeford the other day and all he said about schools was that not every student would return after half term as lessons had to be learned from last year. I’m wondering if Wales will be reverting to a blended learning plan like we had back in July. Either way, it’d be nice if the four nations could agree on a strategy.

Unfortunately probably a lot of them have caught it in hospital when they go in for something else not Covid related. That's the saddest for me, these are people who are probably doing all the distancing and sanitising but still end up with it.

Literally where are you getting this from

Well I read about a lad, well, 22ish who had been nowhere else but for an X-Ray and died from it. So where else had he caught it iif he'd never been even to a shop? Better safe than sorry. The other stuff can wait.

So you read about 1 person catching it who claims to not have been anywhere else and now all hospitals are covid infection sources. Sounds legit. The chances of catching it in a hospital (where y'know covidwards are separated from normal wards) are like going to a supermarket.

But yeah please stay out of the hospitals by worsening whatever condition one might be in, just so that small chance of catching Rona is avoided 🤡

That's why I'm not going anywhere near the hospital at present. Need an X-Ray on my leg and my diabetic eye screening is overdue but have told them I'm just not going in the present climate.

Have you spoke to your GP about an X-Ray? The government was supposed to have done a deal with private hospitals to use their facilities to help keep Covid and non-Covid patients apart. What happened to that? Try asking your GP whether there is any chance of having the X-Ray done at a private hospital on the NHS. Alternatively, your GP should be able to tell you whether the X-Ray facilities at your local hospital are anywhere near the parts where Covid patients will be.

Thanks Suedy. Will do that tomorrow.

Not looking good with the 77 cases of the (possibly vaccine resistant) South African variant in the UK and probably quite a few more cases than that haven't been tested. Of course it is probably still a very small minority of Covid cases so the current vaccine is still very much worthwhile having.

The scientists/pharmaceutical companies should start trying to make a new vaccine now based on the South African variant I think, whats going to happen with the vaccination rollout in South Africa for example if the South African variant is found to be resistant to the current vaccine?

Like Chris, I have also seen a few stories on online news websites about people unfortunately catching it in hospitals.

There is no evidence to suggest that the current vaccines will not be effective against the new strain.

Very little has been done in the UK to determine where anyone picked up the virus so any claims that they picked it up in hospital is pure supposition.

The epidemiologists that I've seen discuss this are very confident that an altered vaccine could rapidly be developed (much in the same way as the Flu vaccine is altered every winter) in the unlikely event that these mutations reduced the efficacy of the vaccine, although as Suedehead says above - no evidence to suggest they will reduce it.

Anyway, some good news today that deaths were down week-on-week for the first time since mid-December and new cases are down 22%.

Finally our local gov taking things properly seriously

We’ve had hospital outbreaks of the British Variant B117 and theyre so scared of it hitting the public that they’re quarantining the whole hospital and it’s entire staff. They’re banned from public transport and are instead being carried by BerlKönig, a weird Über Pool style service from the local public transport company. Except without other passengers of course.

If only we had taken things more seriously in September we wouldn’t be in quite such a mess. possibly Germany wide we would be in a better place had Berlin not let the second wave run completely unchecked for nearly 3 months

Are they calling variant B-117 the 'Kent/Farage' variant? Or maybe 'Gammon' variant?

I think it is not quite as transmissible as earlier reports feared, around 30-50% more transmissible as opposed to 70% more - obviously still bad though.

Well my wife was talking to a very upset couple at the undertakers where Rachel's ashes are and their son was only 20 odd and had no prior illnesses or conditions and they swore blind he caught it after a visit to Newham hospital. His mum said he never went anywhere else as he was a recluse and had agoraphobia. That's what has put me off going. Must be in the atmosphere.

Police up and down the country slammed for handing out £200 fines today to people out getting some fresh air in the snow and letting their kids play in it and snowball. Just ridiculous.

Nah they’re using B-117 exclusively in the media here. I’d be all for calling it the Farage Virus but then what would we call Brexit voters?

It's a pandemic  Don't know what people want sometimes.

Many were social-distancing and it doesn't pass as easily outside. They need the public onside and many on Twitter now saying it's just a means to make money. Lose the public support and that's it.

I'm not saying that nobody has picked it up in hospital. I'm just saying that nobody really knows how many people have picked it up in hospital, any more than we know how many people have picked it up in Asda.

Fair point.

We need the public onside so people are not taking the piss. I don't think it's a way to make money, it's a way to ensure people stay at home and only come out for daily exercise. Then just maybe we might be able to grab a beer in a pub by May.
