Keeping with the animal theme, I'd heard of Swedish band JUNG before but this was the first of their songs that really piqued my interest. This song manages to combine the fun music of summer and the very real nightmare of the sea levels rising and all the animals dying into a single song which I'm not sure I've heard done before, give a listen and see what you think!

The first of Declan's three #1s to fall, this is very different from The Kids / Beautiful Faces so I wasn't sure if it would be for me (as Daniel You're A Still A Child never really clicked with me) but it gre on me and by the end of the week it was doing enough to be my #1. I'm not sure this live video does the song itself justice but it really is a masterpiece!

Probably not an ideal time for this to show up given its recent performance on BJSC but there we go. This was my #1 in the final weeks of 2020, a beatiful piano piece which focusses on the singer being an 'author' narrating her own life and relationships. It's also the first and only chart appearance so far for Irish singer Luz (pronounced 'Luce' apparently).

We're shedding #1s quite quickly now, the next one to go being this mellow summer track from The Knocks and MUNA. Admittedly the transition between the build-up and the drop is a bit of a shock and it took me a while to get over it but it was soon one of my favourites and took advantage of a few stale weeks in the summer to nab a #1.

It feels a bit bizarre for me to be putting a 5-week #1 outside of my Top 20 but I have to remember that this was during the time when I voluntarily abstained from music during Lent so very little moved around the March/April period. Not taking anything away from The Fratellis though, this is a real stomper of an indie-pop track, similar to 'I Guess... I Suppose' from their last album but more obviously single material, and allowing the band to keep their #1-or-bust streak going!

Our highest Eurovision appearance now! For the second year in a row this comes from a Slovenian artist, the difference this time being that he wasn't representing Slovenia but for some ereason had chosen Germany instead (in fact I can't even remember who represented Slovenia this year whoops). It's dance-pop at its absolute best, incredibly infectious and stuck around for much longer than the rest of the songs in the contest.

We're already at the third highest dance song in our countdown, and coincidentially all three are songs released at the tail-end of 2020 that became hits for me at the start of the year. Don Diablo is pretty hit-and-miss for me but this is one of his absolute best, dragging brando back out of the woodwork from his 2018 (was it really that long ago???) hit to produce something considerably better, making use of his vocals brilliantly (unlike 'The Bender' which I will happily pretend never happened) and with a fab production as well.

We finish this section with the highest Nicelandic BJSC entry in the countdown, although there are still two BJSC discoveries left to come! This is Irish band Inhaler, most famous for the lead singer being Bono's son which I will admit was the thing that made me check them out in the first place but after discovering this I certainly had a lot more interest in them, this track bringing real 80s synth vibes into the world of indie-pop for a fantastically earworm-y song. Obviously it DNQd, and Inhaler have since become one of the biggest one-hit-wonders of 2020 as nothing they released could come close to this.

This ended up considerably higher than this based on points alone, I've pushed it down a bit but hearing it again now it still sounds really nice! Gabrielle had already teamed up with Irish band The Coronas for a song which is yet to appear, and then evidently decided that one Irish band wasn't enough so went and did a song with Kodaline as well. Whatever the reason, she's given Kodaline their highest appearance in this EOY and the only of their new songs to make the EOY Top 100. The chorus isn't too catchy but the build up is brilliant and I could listen to it all day long.

The first of TWO solo female songs in my Top 10, maybe my gender bias isn't as big as I thought it was! (:kink:) Anyway I had absolutely no interest in Alicia Keys up until this song but I really couldn't ignore this, incredibly catchy and of course taking on the topic of those most under-represented and marginalised in life. It feels weird hearing a song about young teachers and student doctors now and it NOT be a song recorded before lockdown but that is the case, it does make the song even more poignant now though.

We lose another #1 now and another dance song, as well as yet another song that sounds so much better hearing it now than how I remembered it. A brilliant song about the people around us with a really smooth drop that I don't think I've really heard much like since, which is what makes this one so special for me. Maybe The Chainsmokers will pop up with something half-decent again in the future.

Woah, that's a long chart run. I don't think I realised it was quite that long until now but there we go. Anyway this is the third big hit for American band lovelytheband (who, unlike Kyd the Band, are actually a band) and what it lacks in earwormyness from the first two tracks it certainly makes up for in being an absolute tune. Hence the long chart run. I always like to think that the reason they sing 'I keep mistaking loneliness for love' is a response to all the times people mis-read their name as 'lonelytheband' but I've got no evidence for that! :P

CoCo and the Butterfields were one of the few bands who seemed to have made a song about lockdown years before it happened, the culprit here being 'Alone' from 2014 with the hook 'it's a big wide world but everyone's stuck at home'. Of course whjen lockdown hit that made them prime targets to re-record their trakc and stick it out as an NHS charity single, which is exactly what they did, and my what a beautiful track it is. It's five minutes long but I didn't even realise the first few times I heard it simply because of how brilliant it is, really really really worth a listen!

The highest album track in my countdown, although I certainly considered it a single given the chart run I gave it. I think what made this one so special is that it didn't really stand out for me imnitially, but as time pased I found that this was the song that was in my head, not just from this album but from all the songs I was listening to at the time. It's quite long at the grand old length of 5 minutes but worth all of it and a brilliant final #1 for them in my chart. Bye bye Walking on Cars :(

The second-highest BJSC discovery and the highest track by a solo lady, this song really stood out to me, a brilliant indie beat, her refreshing accent and the power in her voice all come together to produce this fatastic song that was very unlucky to miss the #1 spot, fighting for it in the same week as San Cisco and Saint Motel. Sadly she's a one-hit wonder for now but let's see what 2021 brings!
