I still can't get over Mr Blobby beating Take That to Christmas number one in 1993, that has to go down as the worst Christmas number one ever.

My absolute favourites:

1954: Winifred Atwell - Let’s Have Another Party

1959: Emile Ford and the Checkmates - What Do You Want To Make Those Eyes At Me For?

1961: Danny Williams - Moon River

1963: The Beatles - I Want To Hold Your Hand

1964: The Beatles - I Feel Fine

1965: The Beatles - Day Tripper / We Can Work It Out

1967: The Beatles - Hello, Goodbye

1973: Slade - Merry Xmas Everybody

1975: Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody

1978: Boney M. - Mary’s Boy Child / Oh My Lord

1979: Pink Floyd - Another Brick In The Wall (Pt. 2)

1981: The Human League - Don't You Want Me

1984: Band Aid - Do They Know It’s Christmas?

1985: Shakin’ Stevens - Merry Christmas Everyone

1987: Pet Shop Boys - Always On My Mind

1994: East 17 - Stay Another Day

1995: Michael Jackson - Earth Song

1996: Spice Girls - 2 Become 1

1997: Spice Girls - Too Much

2002: Girls Aloud - Sound Of The Underground

2003: Michael Andrews & Gary Jules - Mad World

2009: Rage Against The Machine - Killing In The Name

2016: Clean Bandit feat. Sean Paul & Anne-Marie - Rockabye

Pink Floyd probably the best of the best.

Not heard the new LadBaby song yet (which will inevitably be the latest addition) but expectations are low after the last two :kink:

Starts from the 80s with sales, it needs updating... If someone can finish it off it be great as I need to get on

I agree. I’d love to see both Mariah and Wham in that list someday. I don’t think it’ll be this year, unfortunately.

Conversely I always tend to remember the novelty hits (assuming they're big hits in the first place). Wealdstone Raider & Lou Monte for example always get a spin on my Spotify every year :D

Interesting that before LadBaby that last novelty #1 was way back in 2000. So it is very rare for novelty songs to actually go all the way to the top. LadBaby just makes it look so easy.

We should do a quick rate of these to find out Buzzjacks favourite Christmas number 1, everyone just giving their top 20 or top 10.

Some great sales in the singles and albums there the notable exception being Mr Blobby lol but he was a big Saturday night Noel Edmonds show star then so no surprising the single sold alright. Lol at ‘Mistletoe and Wine outsold Band Aid 2 in Xmas week in 1988/89!

Albums

2001 Robbie Williams Swing When You're Winning 365,208

2002 Robbie Williams Escapology 310,237

2004 Robbie Williams Greatest Hits 183,871

[2006 Take That Beautiful World 443,070]

[2008 Take That The Circus 381,650]

[2010 Take That Progress 330,251]

2013 Robbie Williams Swings Both Ways 126,330

Pretty amazing! Whatever happened to Robbie recently?

2015 Adele – 25 449,870

And on her fifth week in the chart when she'd already sold 2m copies in the first 4 weeks. What an icon *.*

For completeness sake (in the singles):

2016 Rockabye 57,361

2017 Perfect 85,397

2018 We Built This City 75,442

2019 I Love Sausage Rolls 92,896

Rockabye the lowest Christmas #1 weekly sale of the last 40 years by some distance!

He's releasing coronavirus-related Christmas songs about Santa being on his way but keeping 2m away.

He wasn't too far off getting the Christmas #1 album again last year so I'd say... not much? x

Don’t knock a future Christmas classic

1993 Mr. Blobby Mr. Blobby 92,500

2007 Leon Jackson When You Believe 275,742

2012 The Justice Collective He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother 269,248

Mad thinking that these 3 songs were at one point top of the biggest sales week of the year, but now aren't available digitally at all. Band Aid II appeared on Spotify for the first time this year - surely these would pick up enough streams to make it worthwhile for the rights owners?

Don’t knock a future Christmas classic

Walk This Sleigh is way better from Robbie Williams than his new Christmas song. I do have good memories of Walk This Sleigh despite it not being a UK hit as the chorus was used quite a bit as a soundbed in ITV's This Morning I think around Christmas in the early 00s.
